Pre-Christmas destockage sales - how and when to catch them?

Hi,
I am suddenly in need of a car, our Passat died prematurely and we need a new car more or less ASAP. I have really very little knowledge about car shopping, so I apologize in advance if I am asking stupid questions.

I've read in a few places on the forum that before the new year car dealerships try to move demonstration cars and car that spent too long on the lot. Any tips when they do it and how it could be possible to catch a possible "destockage"? We are still debating new car vs occasion, but if we are buying an used car, it will be only 1-2 years old, not more. Are the car dealers prone to sudden bursts of generosity so we shall go around on Dec 24 looking for sales? Or is it the opposite, the car sales are pretty dead in the second half of December and we have to try to do it now / soon or wait until Jan? Any advice on car shopping this time of the year will be greatly appreciated.

Again, sorry if the questions are not very smart or were discussed somewhere. And thanks in advance!

Just go to the garage of your favourite brand and ask them for their best offer.

This garage has very low prices, Skoda, Toyota, VW

Thanks! We are thinking about BMW X3 or Series 3 Touring, but are not yet sure, and open to other brands. Anyone knows about good BMW dealer in Vaud or close? We visited one in Morges, but the guy there ignored us almost completely and even did not let us test drive a 328i Touring despite a couple requests, said he's busy (was talking over the phone all the time, we left after 15 mins).
