Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

To be honest, I have not looked into their business practices, but as a consumer, I have and will continue to support Uber.

I realize my personal situation might not apply to everyone's case, but I use it regularly and in my case, it works perfectly and covers a need that was not satisfied before. I usually drive, or take public transit (nothing at all to complain about here in the DC area) or walk. I would normally take a taxi in two situations: (1) when going to the airport with a lot of luggage, or very early in the morning/late at night; and (2) after a night out when it's very late and I didn't take my car but went out using public transit, so I don't have to worry about having a drink.

While I wouldn't particularly care about a fixed schedule in case (2), in case (1) I actually need to be somewhere at a specified time. Since I've been stood up twice and risked missing my flights both times, by taxi drivers whom I had booked in advance, that was it for me. In one of those cases, I even received a nasty call from the taxi company because I did not wait for the taxi which showed up a half hour after the agreed time!!! Are you kidding me? Both times, a prompt, reliable, friendly Uber driver was the one who saved the day and made me catch my flights.

All the Uber drivers I've talked to seemed happy with the company, friendly, and on time when requested. Say all you want about regulations and unfairness, but I am not giving my hard-earned dollars to unreliable and arrogant taxi companies.

Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

Y'all realize that the Uber cars are driven by (a subset of) the very same folks that are an ongoing source of complaints in the EF : Drivers in Switzerland
I don't recall reading many complaints about Swiss cabbies.

Because the majority of EFers are smart enough to avoid using swiss cabs

Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

When you're looking at things like airport transfers, you can also do Priceline. Does anybody have any first hand experience how that compares to Uber?

I wouldn't do it in Switzerland as public transport to places like airports is pretty good, but at vacation destinations I've had local limos services undercut official taxi fares by a fair margin when I went onto Priceline.

Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

Any Baselers used uber to go from Basel into France (around 15-20 km up A35)?

I'm guessing, as they'll give me an estimate that getting there is no issue, but will I be able to use them for the return journey, or must journeys begin in Basel (or at least in Switzerland)?

Best bet would be to look for a taxi operator at your destination for the return journey - quite likely going to be as cheap as Uber anyway, and indeed you might get a better deal if you use them both ways.

But no, I've never used Uber. Not sure I ever would, TBH.

Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

It's still going in Basel, and working well. There's not a load of drivers, so there's periods when there are no cars available, but overall, that's probably not so bad bat least drivers are quite busy when they're working.

Re: Support Uber in Basel - come on EF'ers!

the grey legal situation keeps drivers away, until a federal legal framework for this is in place it will be difficult, but to push politcians to focus on this it has to get big enough to become a "problem"...
