Train crash north of Zürich injures 50 [Later reports state six injured]

A train at Rafz station was hit behind by a faster train early this morning causing it to de-rail on a bridge, no reports of deaths, hope all EFers are ok this morning..

20 minuten (German)

RT (English)

EDIT. Swiss media reports only 5, not 50 injured as my title.

Expect serious delays to train transport today, the local road under the bridge has been closed too

I wondered why fire engines, ambulances and police cars were streaming past my place this morning!

Looks like only a few injured, could have been a lot worse.

Looks like they are close to finishing the tidying up; a railway locomotive just went past on the back of a huge truck - I saw it too late to get a photo

Re: Train crash north of Zürich injures 50 [Later reports state six injured]

How this train crash occurred would have been similar to this BNSF crash (but on slightly smaller scale). The POV represents the fast train in the Swiss case.

Interestly, the route is fitted with a later generation, more intelligent signalling system, that would normally trip a full brake application if a train is to fast for the next signal it is supposed to go through. But here is the failure in the system : Because that train was programmed as terminating at Rafz, and therefore not supposed to go through that signal, there was no predictive brake application. Therefore the S-Bahn train only braked fully once it had passed the red signal and entered the next block, interfering with the path of the fast train.

As soon as a rogue train trespasses on another "block" (a section of track authorised to be occupied by one train) , interlocking dictates all other signals cleared in that block will "reverse" to red. This is visible in the video at 0:39 . Although I am sure the massive clouds of brake dust and the driver bailing out weren't good signs either.

Not related to a train crash...but does anyone have any idea what happened on Lagerstrasse (Europaallee) area? Hundreds of windows were broken.

When I see this I think why do they move damaged stock on the roads, surely they could lift them onto a second boogie and move them on the rails. It's their business after all.

No, what happened was the reverse of this.

Both trains were travelling in the same direction, and the loop track should have been used to permit the fast train to overtake the slow one. But for some reason both trains started up at the same time and crashed at the switch.

Re: Train crash north of Zürich injures 50 [Later reports state six injured]

Was a bit of "something" for the locals here to go ogle at.
We drove thru under the bridge yesterday - so it was not damaged as was suspected.
I think maybe the "50 injured" was because an equiped "hospital bus" for 50 patients was immediately sent to the scene. But not required. Also were 3 Rega helicopters.
I guess hearing two trains had collided assumes the worst - there could be many injured. The 5 were "not seriously" injured. The driver of the one train was serious and air-lifted.

I was amazed how quickly the wrecks were cleared! Especially with rain and snow on Saturday evening.
