And Shithole at 9?!

How does one rate and airport anyhow? My two criteria are how quickly one can get through it to get to your plane. And how quickly you can get out of it again.

A bit unfair to have Zurich at #1 every year though

HK is not bad but certainly that not that high up - it is even worse if you transfer from Macau on the ferry.

Singapore never really did it for me - it is very good but I'd argue Zurich is better.

Good to see the US absent!

I guess you start from that and add not looking like a 1960s toilet and not feeling like you've been mugged if you buy food as the secondary factors.

Certainly your two criteria mean I would always rate LCY above LHR.

Re: good airports

Best airports to shop? To get your 10,000 steps in? Criteria please.

Here is my list which I am sure you will all agree with...

KTYS - BEST US airport I have ever flown out of. parking lot directly across from the terminal. Most major US airlines fly there. Approximately 1 hour from 4 major hubs (Atlanta, DC, Chicago, Charlotte). TSA lines are on ave about 10 people long. Rocking chairs in the terminal to do some sittin' and a thinkin'.

KDKX- my home field. "Thank you approach, I have the field in sight. Request cancel"

BSL- wish more airlines served it, but it is still soooo convenient. 50 bus- you are my friend- except when you pull away as I exit the terminal after a long week. Then I secretly hope for your utter ruin.

ZRH- not bad. Shopping blows. Convenient access to SBB.

PEK- it's out a ways, but I have always had good luck here. Nice selection of shopping. Never really crowded (same with ZRH)

36U - means I'm going skiing!

ORD- it's actually an easy airport to get around given its one of the busiest in the US (except for the B22 to F14 connection I used to have to make) and I never miss an opportunity for a Chicago Dog.

AIRPORTS NOT ON MY LIST:

CDG, LHR, ATL, IAD, TXL,

De Gaulle, Heathrow, Atlanta, Dulles, Tegal, Schipol, Hong Kong, Düsseldorf,Rome, oh hell - most of them.

OK - time to go watch the eclipse

This study lost all its potential credibility the moment I read Paris CDG - 48th place and Pragues A. 85th place.

Yep, time to watch the eclipse...

Re: good airports

Heathrow Terminal 5 (only) is up there with the best of them IMHO. I usually pride myself on razor thin margins when it comes to getting to the airport, but if I'm flying BA from Heathrow then I will happily get there 2 hours before, have a bite, browse the shops (especially the gadgets) etc.. The prices in Dixons for example are better than the High Street.

Re: good airports

Hasenstrick used to be the best airfield in the world. Until they closed it down. No check in, no delays and usually above the fog and murk hanging over the lake of Zürich. Great approaches from either end, you had to transmit on VHF to close the road barrier at the eastern end.

It was like an aircraft carrier on the Bachtel.

Avoriaz ski resort, France.

With it's patented overhead passenger carrying system to whisk passengers from their plane on the snow to the car park.

Zürich used to be really good. But the gadgetbahn with the cow noises just adds to time and uncertainty and look like it was just put in to satisfy some wanabee US-esque mega-airport cravings. Staff can be a hit and miss thing with some being very helpful and others not so. The train station is a huge plus, and now they have a tram connection too that's another plus.

London City is practical and efficient but the architecture and ambiace are ugly as hell. It feels like a clone of 1970s Luton transposed to a better location.

Re: good airports

Another criterion for me is the accessibility of an airport from city centre - thus Munich falls down my list as it quite far NE from centre and there is no highspeed rail link. It is also really spread out, and the commuter trains only make one stop.

Stockholm as an airport is pretty nondescript, and the rail link is a ripoff. You can take a regular commuter train but have to pay an extra fee to get on/off at Arlanda. Swedes haven't quite figured yet out how to do privatisation well.

Oslo is quite good, but not a major airport on scale of the others in the top 10, and they are expanding - could be good or bad.

Easy, quick accessibility probably eliminates any US airport, except perhaps JFK - you know you you're not in Kansas anymore "next stop JaMAKEa". I'm sure there are others, but try convincing someone in US you'll take the train..

London, definitely LCY w/DLR from Kings X. Despite the speed, unless traveling from Paddington area, the Piccadilly line is more efficient, and a lot cheaper

LCY a good airport? I fly from it all the time, the place is budget airport all but in name. The money making scam with the liquids in the bag catches so many people out forcing them to check bags in or throw stuff away. Next they'll start charging 2 quid to be dropped off there!

Let me guess, you've not had the (dis)pleasure of connecting for a U.S.-bound flight there?

I have travelled to the US and beyond with BA from Basel (e.g. Basel>LHR>JFK) and it has been incredibly smooth with bags checked through to their final destination. However I can imagine if you're mixing carriers, crossing terminals, collect/re-checking luggage etc.. then it might be a different story. At least the announcements are in English though

My rating based on easy-in easy-out for a London airport - haven't encountered the charge for liquids (yet). The coordinates of my commuting "Bermuda triangle" have shifted in the last year and a corresponding change in frequently visited airport hells.
