I can also recommend Montpelier. Very nice city, and not that expensive.

I've used to drive at night but cannot any longer, so for really long all day driving I'm trying to start as early as possible to arrive before midnight and before the next sleep cycle. If I cannot do it, then I'll park and sleep a few hours in a seat; not perfect but then the body finishes its sleep cycle and one can continue.
Couldn't agree more. I think 8 hours of daylight driving should not be a challenge - used to be a breeze 5 years ago.

Nil, gmaps shows 'roadworks' in many sections. Is it bad?

So 7 hours approx from Geneva is good? The kids are both in their teens, and the challenge is to get them to interact a bit - I'm more worried about myboredom
7 hours is definitely doable. "Life" by Keith Richards is a good choice for older teens to listen to (~23 hours of audio).

8hrs according to TCS, if you keep to speed limits. But bear in mind roads to the South and along to Spain at Easter will be VERY busy.

We went down by Geneva and it wasn't bad at all. Only a tiny portion was in construction.

From the Spanish border to Barcelona, be careful on the road. Don't stop unless it's in a busy stop area.

There are groups of thieves who look for foreign plates and throws rocks at your car, when they come at your car level, they point at your tire frenetically to make you stop on the side of the road. They create diversion and steal your possessions and/or the car.

Keep driving no matter what and stop at a busing resting area.

We didn't see any on our trip but it happened to a friend of mine during Christmas.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

We did that trip from ZH to MAD (and back) a few times. In total, door-to-door, is about 18h non-stop. If you take from it 4 hours ZH-GEN and 6 BCN-MAD, 8 hours is absolutely feasible and you can do it in one round.

However, dogs need to be walked at least twice in that timeframe, so as someone said, start early in the morning, about 8 and you will be there by the time of dinner without any stress. Take the chance to walk the dogs while you refuel so you save time not stopping more times than required.

Sometimes we stayed at Nìmes in France, but some others we stayed directly in BCN as we did the ZRH BCN leg in one round, leaving ZH at noon and getting there by 23.30. But GEN-BCN, I don't think you need a sleep layover...

I plan to leave around 9.30 after a brunch... and obviously pee stops every 2 hours (for dog, kids n a cigarette for me).. + one longish stop for a meal, and after a total of maybe 10 hours, we're home by 8pm for dinner.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

Reached Barcelona in total driving time approx 9 hours. The roads in France as well as Spain were clear, the only high traffic / jams were in CH !

Pleasant doable trip - so far.
