Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

When driving outside of CH and the EU, I would suggest at a minimum you carry with you a copy of the ENGLISH TRANSLATION of the CH driving licence.

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

after landing up here (as ever) after a google search for the thread title, i looked up OCN and it seems the Swiss Drivers Licence is NOT VALID for USA !!

OCN Fribourg offers an 'International Permit' - other cantons too presumably.

In what context? For tourism purposes as far as I know it's perfectly fine. We used our Swiss ones when hiring a car in the US back in 2007 and no one queried it. Obviously if you're moving there permanently it's different.

I also found this by googling - from Just Landed.

"About foreign driving licence
Tourists may drive in the US for up to a year with a foreign driving licence, provided the issuing country is party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (see art. 1 and art. 25 para. 1) or to the Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automotive Traffic (Washington, 1943); most countries are contracting parties. If your licence wasn’t issued by a country which is a contracting party to either of these conventions or if you intend to work or study in the US, you must obtain a driving licence (usually within 30 to 90 days) in the state where you land or where you’re a resident. This may result in the confiscation of your foreign or existing licence (or your American licence may be stamped ‘valid in state only’). You may need an American licence in order to obtain car insurance.

If your foreign licence doesn’t contain a photograph or is written in a language other than English, it’s wise (but not mandatory) to obtain an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). Always carry your foreign licence as well as your IDP. Without an IDP it may be necessary to obtain a certified English translation of your foreign driving licence, usually obtainable from your country’s embassy in the US."

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

I don't think there's any serious problem with Swiss drivers' licenses in the USA, unless you still own one of those newspaper-sized old ones, which may trigger laughing fits among police officers. That's where the International Driver's Permit may come in handy to show that your huge document really is a driver's license.

Re: Driving in US with Swiss License

So i presume it is safe to hire AND drive a car in USA with a (card type) Swiss driving licence, and a translated International Driving permit is not necessary.

Re: Driving a rent car with in the USA with the swiss permit?

Hello,
There isn't a problem to rent a car with the Swiss DL. But I had the big fine in NY when I was stopped by NY police. They did not accept my swiss permit because I have the US passport. They fined me for driving without valid permit.I tried to dispute it in the court: I was in NY for 10 days only, provide my air ticket back to Switzerland, my swiss residential permit. It does not matter. - no luck. I should pay any way.

Based on what code, act, or law? I mean your were certainly given references which regulation you did not observe and thus could be fined...

Do you have a valid/unexpired U.S.-issued license though? If so, I'm fairly sure you have to present that to the authorities, not a foreign license. If don't have a U.S. license then I don't know what law you'd be breaking.

Seems rather contradictory...no, in fact very contradictory that you can legally hire a car with a Swiss DL backed by a US passport in the US yet can not legally drive it there!!

Based on that fact alone I would again dispute the ticket.

OK. I could not answer all these questions. It was about 3 years ago.
I tried to explain to police that I am the resident of Switzerland and I have valid swiss license. IT DID NOT WORK. I was driving the car of my parents not rent.
I sent the proof to my relatives and they submitted it to court. It did not work either. After that I got IDP from Service cantonal des véhicules
Cost 40ch. I didn't try it yet. Hope it helps.

I could not answer it. It was about 3 years ago. I remembered : 'Driving the car w/out valid permit'. Case closed. I was going back to Switzerland in 4 days.I could not represent myself in a court.

Hiring a car is never or very, very seldom an issue. For example in Switzerland you can own and register a car on your name even when you are not entitled to drive the car or, mind boggling but true, when you are a minor.

Car rental company are mostly interested in business and may not know all the details of the law. By legally hiring I mostly understand, I pay the company the negotiated fees and i bring back the car in as good condition as it is possible.

Anyway, for New York State the provisions under which a foreign or out-of-state license is recognized is given in Section 250 off the NY Vehicle and Traffic Law http://ypdcrime.com/vt/article3.htm
Given that, a Swiss license is perfectly o.k.

Like other States NY does not mandate an International Driving Permit (which is just a translation, and only helpful together with an actual valid license) but recommends it to speed up things in case of a police check: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/drive-new-york-state

Still do not see how Lenysws could not drive his parents car. Unless Lenysws was in New York state for more than 90 days. But strange, don't you get a written verdict?

Sometime about fall 2006 I got stopped just south of Corning PA, driving my recently deceased father's car (Canadian plates) with my Swiss license.

I was only a mile or two over the limit. When I got into the cruiser and showed him my Swiss license he more or less said "Oh shit, I have to write the ticket up now, but I'll have to ask you to translate your license for me. Can I trust you?"

So I said, "Yes, as a boy scout, you can." then I translated the license and wrote my Swiss postal address out on a scrap of paper so he could fill in the ticket. When he started to fill the address in he got it completely wrong, so I said "But officer", to which he raised a finger to his lips and pointed to the section of the ticket which listed license details. Pretty much everything was so badly transposed that even the NSA wouldn't have been able to link this misdemeanor to me.
