You are welcome Just be careful in winter. It should be well kept but still, it is a mountain pass. Observe the signs which pass is open

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

oh what fun the Gottardo is....last night it seems there was a truck that lost a wheel in the tunnel. It's the first time I've driven on the wrong side of the road in there......there was only one car behind me as they closed off the whole tunnel. And it seems you don't get into trouble when you pass lots of red lights on your side in the tunnel.....

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Holy thread resurrection Batman! As holidays are upon us and people are thinking of the beauty of Ticino, just thought I'd post my latest Gotthard experience.

Last Thursday, Ascension, I drove down to Ticino from Basel.
Left at 4:45am, arrived in the queue, 2km, at 6:15 and was in the tunnel by 6:40.
My friend left Basel at 6am same morning, spent 75 mins queueing.

Return journey was worse. Left Locarno at 23:00 on Saturday night, had a 5km queue, entered the tunnel approx 1am.
My friend left Cernobbio at 9am Sunday, spent 3 hours queueing.

Looks like this weekend its even worse.
driving-via-gotthard-tunnel-never-again-gotthard.jpg

Looks like you can't leave too early.
The weekend in Gandria was worth it though.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Oh I miss this thread!

We went to Lake Como last weekend. We left on Thursday (Ascension) from Zurich at 10.30 and spent 2 hours queuing. We came back on Sunday, leaving Menaggio at 13.30 and spent a record 5 hours in a 15 km queue!!! We were stationary for about an hour at a time and only got through the tunnel at 20.00, arriving back in Zurich at 23.00 after a break for a late dinner. Truly the worst ever for us! Not to mention that we were travelling with 2 small kids ...

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Resurrection! Let's not let old threads die so easily.

I have to drive from Basel to Como, leaving Saturday morning.
I cannot see myself leaving before 7am.

Decisions, decisions.

San Bernadino or Gotthard? Never done the SB before. I have both good and bad memories of the Gotthard.
I'm not interested in any driving experiences over the passes, at least not in my car, so it will be the tunnels.

Google maps says, SB is 80km further, 50 mins longer, but it's not accounting for Saturday morning traffic at the Gotthard.

TCS predict 'light' weekend traffic, which is more than weekday traffic.
Would that mean very light for San Bernadino compared to Gotthard? I don't know the relative differences in throughput.

Any opinions? Tempted by the San Bernadino anyway, as I've not done that route before.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

If it helps: Last Saturday around 11am-ish the queue was just before the Wassen exit. Do not know how long it will take to the tunnel from there as I took the Wassen exit and went over the pass. The traffic through the Schöllenen was moderate and delay even with the construction the minimal.

An other option from Basel is the Lötschberg-Simplon-Centovalli or Intra-Leveno ferry route.

Also in Google maps you can set the time you intend to drive. It gets you better estimates of the expected driving times.

It helps, that's 4km so under an hour.

Checked that before, don't like the look of it. Maybe if it was a holiday weekend or August.

Did that, estimate, worse case Gotthard is 4:10 vs worst case SB, 4:50.
I'm more expecting worse case Gotthard and best case SB though, at 4hrs.
Seems there's an hours difference, which closes depending on the relevant queue at the tunnels.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I go to Lugano once or twice per month year round. I always make sure to arrive at the tunnel after 10 pm if fri/sat/sun and usually, by then, it takes no more than a couple of minutes more to get in. If I have to travel at other times in summer I use the pass. San Bernardino is a pain, I usually never use it.

Just find it too long. But may be just a perception.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

The day I decided to drive to Italy instead of the regular plane trip, we wanted to go to Gotthard.

Unfortunately, there was a very serious accident while we were on our way, so we took the route through San Bernardino.

I am not sure why anyone would have a problem with it: it was peaceful, nice landscape, barely any traffic.

Was perfectly fine. Just a bit curvey, so if you are prone to car sickness, prepare accordingly

That's if you qualify doing it as going up a pass at 25 KM/H in 1st gear!

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Left Basel at 7:30, arrived at San Bernadino tunnel at 11 after a couple of 20 min bio/dog breaks.
The alternate route via the Gotthard had a 40 min queue.
Even so, going via San Bernadino (from Basel) is quite a bit slower than the Gotthard.
I reckon maybe 6-7km queue at the Gotthard would make it worth while/ break even.

Nice easy drive, though I see what superpippo means, lots of bends, lots of changing speed limits, not much scope for overtaking if you get stuck in a queue behind a lorry, etc. Certainly would be no fun in the dark.
