Maths was never my strong point! Of course I realised the tunnel would have to be clear, and they have plenty of cameras to ensure that, but I guess my idea is not really workable.
It could be workable - but only if a direction is blocked for far longer than 20 minutes - maybe at least 1h, possibly even more? For instance, blocking southbound direction on Sunday evenings between 16:00 and 18:00 pm would probably reduce the northbound queues significantly - instead of one side waiting for 5 hours, both sides would wait for at most 2 hours...

This would require some serious changes (signalling, guiding lanes) in the tunnel and quite a bit of traffic discipline management to get it to work though

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

The current procedures are in place for safety reasons.

Increasing the number of vehicles would counter that, thus you won't see an increase in throughput with the today's infrastructure.

Introducing a charge would reduce the traffic.

Doubt it. The traffic problems are mostly only around holidays - in regular weekdays there's almost no queues at all. And people going on holidays will just pay the tax. Mont Blanc tunnel has extortionate fees but still gets blocked at holiday peak times.

In fact, imposing preferential directional traffic at peak times wouldn't be such a bad idea given the amount of time wasted at those events

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Oh dear, it's Pentecost bank holiday Saturday, and it's as grim as ever at the Gotthard.
A crash at Amsteg meant 8km queues at 6am near Amsteg.
Ballpark figures from the TCS Twitter feed:
10am, 10km southbound (over 2 hours)
Midday, 18km - 19km (over 4 hours)
3pm, 15km
5pm, 6km

Why aren’t they loading cars onto trains using the billion franc investment of the Swiss taxpayers? At very least carrying the German and Italian cars avoiding the Swiss roads?

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

This weekend seems like some big 'holiday starting' affair.

Friday July 19th, queues upto 10km from lunchtime onwards, still 5km at midinght and overnight.

Saturday 20th, 11km at 6am, 14km at 7am , that's getting on for 3 hours in the queue. 9am, 11km.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Solution would be to stop holidaying by car and use public transport or plane instead. My back and legs already hurt from continuously being fixed in the same sitting position and from using brake and gas pedals.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Lest we forget, the queues are back.
2am this morning, 9km southbound (we’ll go Friday night and beat the traffic!)
6am this morning 11km ditto

Looks like it will get up to 14 or 15 km today.

It normally just as bad on a Sunday morning (like tomorrow) or is the Friday night/Saturday first-day of holidays particularly bad?

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

It’s an inevitable experience in the south of Switzerland. Everyone complains about the Gotthard tunnel queues and yet everyone comes back each year and each holiday season. It’s part of your long journey to Italy to be able to appreciate vacations even some more.

According to the TCS Twitter Feed, last Sunday, midday, 6km
https://mobile.twitter.com/TCSGottha...Ctwgr%5Eauthor

That looked like the peak, so about a 75min queue.

Is the A2 (Fluelen-Amsteg) re-opened yet?

Anyway, from TCS:

A2 - Luzern Richtung Gotthard

So, 20km total!

Have fun!

Tom

Thanks for the Twitter link. I checked Saturday and it wasn't as bad as today which suggests that tomorrow may be worse than last Sunday.

I’d guess so, seems very school holiday dependent.
If you want to avoid the queues (say an hour or more) I think the only options are avoid from Friday midday to Sunday 6pm, or take San Bernardino (adds 90 mins driving though) or try the Gotthard pass, but again terrible traffic.
At least the San Bernardino timing is reliable.

Be nice to hear some other tactics. I’ve got plenty that failed.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I find the first weekend of Zurich summer holidays seems to be the worse. Friday afternoon typically still okeish.

I think it's a little inevitable over the next 5 weekends. So be ready.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I've been through the Gotthard Tunnel twice recently without any delay so I presume this is school holiday related? More generally, I usually use the San Bernadino route (either tunnel or pass). It may be no quicker (depending on your start point) but at least you keep moving and the views from up there are fantastic.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Now it says:

TCS Gotthard Transport
@TCSGotthard
·
29m
# A2 - Chiasso -> Gotthard - entrance closed at Airolo

6 hrs

# A2 - Lucerne -> Gotthard - between Erstfeld and Göschenen 14 km of traffic jams, congestion, loss of time of up to 5 days, 19 hours and 59 minutes.

Not looking good.
