# A2 - Lucerne -> Gotthard - between Erstfeld and Göschenen 14 km of traffic jams, congestion, loss of time of up to 5 days, 19 hours and 59 minutes.

.
Looks like this was an error - it has now been deleted and it's back to 2 hours.

# A2 - Chiasso -> Gotthard - entrance closed at Airolo
They close the access to the A2 at Göschenen and Airolo to stop people using the back roads to beat the queue. Once you come off you take the pass.
Not sure they do it at Wassen though.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Never mind the Gotthard, we just came back from Tuscany (Close to Cortona) and just over 600km took us 11 hours! The roads in Italy are a state, idiot drivers causing crashes, which create huge tailbacks and roadworks everywhere.

First time, however, we had no traffic going into the tunnel (about 8pm)

Reminds me when I decided to go to Ticino at Ascension. Drove back late on the Saturday night to avoid the Sunday queues, had dinner in Locarno and about 10pm made my move.
2 hour queue!
Got home about 2am.

Thanks for the Twitter link. I checked Saturday and it wasn't as bad as today which suggests that tomorrow may be worse than last Sunday.
11km at midday, 8km at 3pm, so not great today.

20 minute wait at 07:00am. A bit of a wait at the Chiasso border crossing whilst they checked ....... absolutely nothing.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

TCS Twitter reporting 14km at 6am, so worse than last Saturday.
I went to the mountains yesterday, was surprised at the number of DE and NL registered cars, certainly seems like a ‘normal’ holiday season, or maybe less people on holiday, more driving to avoid airports.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

The way it’s gone today heading South is 4km overnight, rapidly building to 12km at 6ish, down to 8km by 1pm.
Northbound was good to 10am then building to 8km currently, so about a 2 hour queue.

I guess they don’t like the alternatives, such as Sunday to Sunday holidays, or not going for 14 days but 12 etc.
I’ve changed tactics and now go on a Friday and come back late in the week, and stay a couple of nights either around Luzern or Wallensee, both beautiful places in their own right.
I pity the Dutch, finishing work on a Friday, heading out to beat the queues, caravan hitched up as they are too mean to cough up for a hotel, and experiencing the 6am 10km queue! All the while bursting for a p1ss.

Well, that's what they got the caravan for if they can't be bothered to abuse the bushes

I can see how parents have much less leeway, school holidays limit their options, they're kind of out of scope. At least somewhat.

But I see no reason for childless couples/singles to go with the crowd. As you say, go and return early or late, take alternative routes, and sleep a night or two underway. Or stay home in the first place, it's sunny all over Europe (obviously exceptions confirm the rule, but the +40° can't have been much fun this year either).

No it hasn't turned. Still gazillion of Germans and Dutch going south. 5km traffic jam

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

A couple of years ago, some Dutch friends were returning to Holland after Easter. Stuck for 2 hours before the tunnel (Pass was still closed) they pulled off at Airolo for some lunch and a bathroom break. Driving round to re-enter the tunnel they were not allowed to take the Airolo entrance as it was blocked, but had to go back to Ambri and rejoin the queue - with another 3 hour wait as it had got longer. They were not amused

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Have they started building the second tunnel yet?

The big problem is that as soon as the second one is open (around 2027), they are going to close the original one for renovation!

I wasn't aware they were building a second tunnel? Is this official?

Newbie around here, never driven to Ticino during vacations. But, car trains are made for this, right? A few CHF more, but sure it beats being stuck in traffic.

I hate those never ending constructions and renovations on the south side of the tunnel
