Re: Driving north via Gotthard in Summer on a Sunday evening

All depends - the later you go the less chance of trouble. HOWEVER there never seems to be a guarantee of traffic. I have done Sunday journeys (at lots of different times) and there were weekends when we were stuck in jams early/late - IE no pattern.

If you want to avoid it - best bet is to leave on Monday!

Re: Driving north via Gotthard in Summer on a Sunday evening

"Usually" is a floating point.

Late evening is a good time, as by then all the Dutch with their caravans have already made the dash. 11:00-14:00 is kinda annoying, as the ferries from Corsica and Sardinia spew out in Genoa and the convoy north begins.

Of course, as it's holiday time almost everywhere all the time these days, best to get a satnat and wing it as it happens.

Or try the Bernina Pass, if it's not out of your way.

We need to be in Venice on Friday at 12 noon.. and was considering leaving Zurich on Friday at about 2 or 3 am.. does anyone have any idea of the traffic around the tunnel during the early morning hours?

We've always travelled through the wee small hours if we need to tackle the Gotthard during high season and haven't encountered too many tailbacks at this hour.

It starts getting bad around 8AM or so this time of year.

Also, the traffic at the border and around Milano starts getting bad around 7AM.

I'd consider the train. Avoid the hassle of the Gotthard, and anyway in Venice unless your car floats very well you will not use it

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I considered that too - but it was about 1k chuffs so I thought it wasn't worthwhile (we're a family of 5).. We're catching a cruise from Venice, not actually visiting there..well the floating comment would still be valid though

May I suggest to drive through Austria, Innsbruck, jump on Brennero freeway to Verona and then arrive in Venice? We usually do that and reach Verona in 5,5 hours leaving from Winterthur.
Most of the road through Austria is not freeway and the speed limit is between 80 and 100 km/h but with no traffic, it's worth it.

You might consider to leave the car in Verona and catch the train for Venice, it's one hour trip. Are you aware that you can't reach Venice by car?

Contact me if you need more info.

Goin to Venice, you can leave the motorway at Trento and go on the highway through Val Sugana. No tolls!

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Hi there.. just want to report back to the forum since it might benefit some people..

We left Zurich at abour 3am and sailed through the G.tunnel. I wouldn't say we were alone but definitely not stuck in traffic. This timing also help us beat the Milan traffic on the ring roads there.

Coming back we stopped by Lugano (was a Saturday) and we left there at about 3pm. Traffic was announced on the radio (in Italian) so before the tunnel we took exit no. 42 and sure enough as soon as we exited (wihtout any traffic) we saw the traffic on the highway.. we continued following the blue signs (i.e. avoiding getting back to the highway) through the G.Pass then continued on towards Zurich. OK the pass does take a longer route but it was really good not being stuck in traffic.

Cheers

A very satisfying feeling driving the Gotthard Pass route and looking down at the standing traffic on the Autobahn below you...

There's a ferry to Venice.
It's no problem taking the car.
Of course, I wouldn't do it unless the hotel had confirmed parking-spaces available.
Our hotel did - but it really depends where you are going. And it's useless for getting around. You still need the tickets for public transport.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I never understood why people are queueing up for this bloody tunnel.
Unless you are towing a caravan or something, the pass is much more fun and often quicker (summer weekends).

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Can anyone comment on what traffic is likely to be like approaching the tunnel this time of year? I had a look on their website and while I could see that there were delays around the tunnel, what I can't figure out is how long they're likely to take. Is there someplace I can look that shows me the average delay?

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I went through once and had been warned how bad it could get, right near the end of summer coming back from Ticino...It was pretty impressive, the amount of traffic...But it was a pretty lowkey affair, I must say...I have had far more contentious waits in LA, SF, Chicago or NY traffic
