We're leaving Zurich at 2pm next Friday for the long weekend. Driving to Lake Como (maybe the North side). I think we'll grad through Chur to avoid the Gotthard, but there seems to be a smaller road branching off through Thusis, through St Moritz and Chiavenna. Anyone know this road?

Julier and Maloja passes.

Spluegen is another option.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

just chiming in with a belated feedback from last easter, going and coming at the worst times possible.
we had chosen the St Bernardino, albeit longer from Zurich, in the hope of avoiding the Gotthard crowds. I was pretty convinced that this would be at all times a better solution. it turned out I was wrong and OH won our bet.

it worked well on Good Friday morning at 7 o'clock, but coming back on Easter Monday late afternoon was awful: about 3 hours delay through stop and go + the 60 km longer route. terrible, next time I'm not sure if we'd rather risk Gotthard anyway.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Julier/Maloja are generally in great shape, Spluegen is mostly narrow and very winding, and in less good shape, and will probably take longer to get to Chiavenna (where the Maloja and Spluelgen roads meet in Italy north of the lake).

In my experience, the Splügen route is usually faster as it's much shorter (about 65 km from Thusis to Chiavenna vs. about 100 km) and the first 25 km from Thusis to Splügen can usually be driven at a more or less constant 80-100 km/h (no tight turns there).

However, Tom is right about the Splügen pass being a narrow and winding road. If you're not comfortable driving on such a road I strongly recommend the Julier/Maloja route.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

These days there a number of reliable resources to have a preview of the traffic flow through the gotthard tunnel such as live webcams , live traffic updates on the google map and updates on the traffic situation from twitter users. I have compiled those sources in an easy to view format for the smart phones.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

2 weeks ago I left Solothurn (before the long weekend) and spent an extra 1 hour on Wednesday morning, queing for the Gotthard.

Returning on Sunday morning, I saw heavy traffic west of Milan heading towards the Gotthard. I promptly turned west and went via Aosta and the Grand St Bernhard tunnel. It was a nice drive, but there is a penalty in the toll for the tunnel, and a much longer route to Solothurn.

The breakover point is at Fribourg, where the 2 routes have the same distance, (Via Gotthard, via St Bernhard) but of course the St Bernhard tunnel charge remains about CHF 29 single

thanks, Claudio. Bit limited in time shown - why not add drill down/out so that people can see the trends?

Hey Claudio,

Generally it's not cool to promote your own website with your very first post on EF. But since the information may be useful to some members, and I can't see how you'd profit from the website, I'll let it lie for now.

Cheers.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Another option is to go over the top of Gotthard did this recently and so long as you dont mind a few corners its a lovely drive and not a lot more distance. You do need to make sure you get the exit in time or you will be in the tunnel jam.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

anyone doing Friday night or Saturday morning south and Sunday afternoon north is asking for trouble until September.

Be thankful they've delayed the maintenance.

And it may NEVER get better.....as they plan to never increase the capacity (although I doubt that in the long term):

A recent report I saw about the Gotthard's route's real capacity shows that 92% remains unused. Use it on a normal day and it's a doddle.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

There should be a VIP line, you know, where you pay maybe CHF 100 to avoid all the queues, I'm sure some would pay even more... No idea how they would do it logistically but I'm sure they'll figure it out.
