Then why would anyone spend 48 CHF for a return trip via the tunnel when they can drive the whole of CH including the tunnel for 40 CHF?
why would anyone drive an additional 2 hours each way and take the chance of queues delaying their journey if the shortest route is though this toll tunnel?

can you drive 2 x 2 hours for less than 48 francs? What's 4 hours of your time worth?

the choice is yours....

Any experiences of the route over the Gotthard tunnel, Gotthard pass? Is it a long detour?

it's nice but if there is a queue, you'd have to leave the highway a few exits before the tunnel AND you'll find coaches, camper vans and caravans obstructing your way as it climbs up and down.

You're talking about two different tunnels, the San Bernardino and Grand St. Bernard are at opposite ends of the country!

If there is no traffic, it takes about 15 minutes more.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

As I'm still a little bitter about getting caught in it last weekend, I just took a glance at the queues today.

13km queue southbound because of overnight closure. Nightmare.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I have some friends visiting this weekend and I wanted to take them to Tessin for the day (we're setting out from Arth).

The first problem is that I cant work out on Google Maps where the San Bernardino Pass is (in the context of a route from North to South). Is it only a viable alternative if coming from Zurich? Or can one switch to the San Bernadino pass even when coming from Arth?

Judging by people's past experience would you say that setting out from Arth around 7.30am on a Saturday morning will mean getting caught up in so much traffic that I should rather change my plans and take my friends elsewhere?

Thanks
Kash.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

If you hit the A13 from Arth, you're lost....!

It should be maximum 1 hour on Saturday each way (I hope for you).

From Arth, head towards Chur, then towards the San Bernardino.

No, that's exactly where it is. Signposts and everything. Google it.

If you decide it doesn't make sense that way from Arth that's your choice.

http://goo.gl/maps/mTOFx this is the san bernardino route, may seem stupid but only takes 34 minutes more from zurich, 1 hour more from arth (at that point i'm not sure it's worth it).

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Hi guys,

thanks for all the info earlier. Just wanted to put down my experience for the record: I left Arth at around 8.20am on the Saturday morning and encountered NO traffic whatsoever when we reached the Gotthard tunnel. We sailed straight through.

Likewise, on the return that evening, we hit the tunnel around 9pm and again there was no traffic at all.

All in all a good experience

Kash.

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

If you have children, and are considering the train, don't forget they travel almost free (after paying CHF 30 per year)
on CFF/SBB/FFS
http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and...dchildren.html

Yes, the scenic route via the Saint Bernhard tunnel in West Switzerland costs Fr 49,40 return for a car. But as I said,
it is always empty and the route is very pleasant, with little traffic. Start your holiday 2 hours earlier, enjoy the drive!

Gneva > Italy. Which route (Mont-Blanc or Saint Bernard tunnel) ?

Euro prices; http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/ov...?country=Italy

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Going through the tunnel tomorrow, direction south. Hopefully that will be OK.

Frankly I'm more concerned with coming back on Oct. 17th afternoon / evening. Do you think it's a "high season", given end of school brake? Not sure how many cantons have it now...

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

Use Simplon pass, you can even forget the tunnel and go above for free and it is not very steep approach. And it is almost empty

Re: Driving via Gotthard tunnel - never again!

I will be coming back to Zurich. Given a need to climb to another pass right after (Furka or Grimsel) doesn't really seem to be an option.

Is there a road tunnel there as well? Or only train one?

Gabriel

Simplon? It is a railway tunnel but climb over the pass is really easy. And it takes 30 minutes from one side to the other.

Thanks Jakub. After all, it's good to have another option. Just in case
