Lausanne: motorcycle self servicing

Hello,

I have just got the bike here in Lausanne (Africa Twin) and need to perform the routine maintenance. There is not a problem for me to do it myself, but I think it would not be much appreciated by my neighbors if I would do it in the yard of our apartment block.

So I am looking for advice.

Is there any self-service garage or other organisation where I can come pay N amount of money and use the space and perhaps some tools? I have found one in the net but it seem to went bankrupt last year.

Perhaps there is some open calm place where I can do the service (oil change, filters, etc.), like the lorry rest place. Of course i would take care of oil and other generated dirt.

Maybe there is motorcycle enthusiasts organization which is renting some place for bike servicing? I would be glad to join.

Any advice is kindly appreciated.

The Location is preferable Lausanne +-20km.

Thanks in advance

Did it before posting. There were couple of relevant hits, but it looks to be all about the joint rides. Or do You know any particular club here in Lausanne?

Nope, sorry. But if I was you I'd start with the Racing Motor Club as racing requires specialist mechanic work, perhaps done by the drivers themselves, and in turn some (lots of) space.

I do it in our under ground community garage. Car out. Tools in. Open is my little workshop. For oil change a tarp under the motorcycle. Done.

Thanks a lot for answers. I think I will try to do it at some parking place near motorway where trucks usually stop.

I would not recommend that. At least not the oil change. I am sure it is not allowed, because of pollution possibility.
A month ago I was driving behind police car, when he saw a truck driver with some cans and open engine bay on big parking lot, police car immediately swerved off the road and went to check him.

Changing oil in a private space is a private matter so the police cannot say anything. The owner of the private space could argue if you make a mess, but not making a mess is not that hard.

I would guess that if you don't make a mess in a public space you still wouldn't get in trouble, but if someone sees you doing it, they surely wouldn't let you do it in the first place as a "I don't trust what kind of mess or not you're gonna make of it".

If you want to be 100% clean, take an electric fuel/oil pump and suck most of the oil out cleanly, and then drain the rest from the plug as usual. The less you have to drain the cleaner the job. A good sized tarp and you're good to go. I've changed oil twice on my own for my car, once in a blue zone in Dietlikon with no complains and no mess, and the other in an underground car park with no complains and no mess. And the car is (or at least can be) much messier.

I've also changed the oil on my bike, and I just went near Hallenstadion and did it behind the recycling bins next to the oil disposing point in the middle of the day. It took me longer to take the fairing out than to actually change oil and filter. I did have a couple of drops filled but a) the place was a mess with garbage anyway, and b) I picked them up with some cloths I had. Not the best solution surely, but whatever. Job done and no harm no foul :D

I would suggest you do it somewhere privately and make sure you don't make a mess of it.

Changing oil in underground garage is against the fire regulations and not allowed. Private or public space doesn't matter. Garage of single family house is excluded.
Places where you change oil, or where you are allowed to wash engine part of car, must have devices that prevents that oil would leak into the canalisation.

Lol. Have dry sump. Sucking it out or not will result in the same amount.

Here a hand operated pump.

Yep will do later on

It looks that at the moment changing oil outside of my apartment would be tricky, perhaps I will use some independent garage. What is the typical oil+filter change price here, in Switzerland (2.7 l)?

Thanks

Re: Lausanne: motorcycle self servicing

Depends on the oil used... mine was just under 40chf a litre and has 2 filters and a filter screen to replace.

We have this on every door... I had my doubts to the validity as our hauswart is "special" but did stop by a fire station once and they did recognise the form number... its old but a genuine notice.

Doesn't give any specific Art. numbers though.

For some reason with tapa talk images are posted twice and rotated.

Hasn't stopped me changing my wheels over (with disproving looks from the hauswart) replacing car front brake calipers and doing a few sneeky oil changes on the yaris and my motorbike.. takes 10 mins ;) whoops.

Jack of all trades. 25.06.2015 09:34

Change the oil in the garage, in the back yard if ok with neighbours, spare car space, quiet street etc etc etc. Just show common sence about catching the oil and preventing DANGEROUS HORRIFIC LIFE THREATENING EARTH KILLING spills.

Some rules are helpful. Some rules are for the idiots.

Kind regards.

Does are not Reparaturen but Wartungen :D Perfectly o.k.

PS: It is Basel. They are a bit special.

Edit: Oops, hope your Hauswart will no see the new version http://www.gvbs.ch/fileadmin/user_up...tellraeume.pdf
I think it is more a template for house rules than an actual law.

you all have to use some common sense. If some repair work would be allowed then it would be difficult to spell out what chemicals are allowed and what not, due to flammable risks and toxic fumes. So they write that now work allowed because most work does create some mess and smells.

if you do work on your vehicle you must be very clean, organized and chemical smell free.

Obviously it will be a problem if you have 20 cans of smelly flammable stuff all around and people get irritated by any of the stuff. Its a community garage. However it is not a problem if you are somewhat hidden and keep your tools and chemicals well organized and smell free.
