Advice on transportation Baden to Zurich (ETH)

Hi all,

I would like your advice. I will be working for 1 year in Zurich (at ETH centrum) and I took an apartment in Baden, next to the train station (200m). Thus, I will need to take a train + a tram each day to work.

From my job they offered either to give me for free a Halfpass or to get a GA with a 15% discount (which already comes to 3100 CHFs!). I also found that there is the point-to-point travelpass which for 5 zones it tells me 2016.00 CHFs.

At the moment, the most attractive option to me is the point-to-point from my own pocket plus the Halfpass for free in case I leave these Zones. I will not have the time to travel a lot outside my work and home areas...

Anyone that makes this trajectory can give me a hint on a cheaper option?

Also, will the point-to-point cover the local transportations (buses, trams, etc.) within these zones or just the trains?

Thanks in advance!

If by point-to-point you mean a combo of ZVV and A-Welle passes (meaning, a Z-Pass with 5 zones within Aargau, from the look of the website), they include tram and bus services in the zones you purchased the abo for. That seems the most economical option if you rarely travel outside of the zones.
GA is very expensive and if you get a halbtax for free occasional travel outside the zones, those reduced tickets probably won't break the bank for you.

IMO the GA is only worth it if you travel outside of your zones several (4+) times a week and you do long trips on weekends. Otherwise, Zürich has a lot to offer as is.

You can take/pay the point-to-point pass on a monthly basis, that way you can just not use it anymore should you find another means of transportation (colleague going by car, buying car yourself etc)

Getting a car parking lot at ETH Zürich is nigh on impossible from what i've heard.

When i was at ETH employees also got reduced price REKA cheques, which you could use towards paying for your abo. The fact was not well publicised though and many people were unaware. It's worth asking if this is still the case.

From what I discussed with some (future) coleagues, going by car is a nightmare. Even the professor that hired me said he is going by train+tram. No parking, too much trafic, etc. With the year pass, I pay for 9 months and get 12.

I already asked and they sent me a paper saying I can either get Halbtax for free or 15% on the GA. Nothing for the Zpass... Maybe because I am for a 1-year contract there is a different arrangement.

Do you know if they make a discount on the Zpass if I already have a Halbtax (which I can get for free)?

Re: Advice on transportation Baden to Zurich (ETH)

I've been doing this for the last 7 years, best way is to buy ZVV-AVelle pass, which includes some zones in between and ZH 110.

Driving is a pain now huge traffic jam in the mornings/evenings, really annoying.

If you have REKA checks you can reduce to 1800 chf probably depending on how much REKA checks you are entitled to buy.

Re: Advice on transportation Baden to Zurich (ETH)

I would give the GA option a second thought.

This is what i did when at the ETH. Having more spare time then than i do now I was away almost every weekend seeing visiting some Swiss town, or looking at an exhibition, or going up some mountain. Just having the GA was such a luxury as I never had to stop and think, what is this going to cost me, or is this within my zones?

Indeed, but if you end up using it for more than nine months, it'll cost more than the yearly pass (you pay the amount of 9 monthly passes for the yearly pass)
