That Zurich Tram Floor Ding Thing Which Goes Ping

Every time I get on the lovely Zurich tram No 7, I choose the last car. I like to stand near the front of it, for some reason.

Almost every time, I will stumble on that silver floor-mounted button. You know, the one that rings a loud bell; makes everyone look up from their phones; and gets everyone else on board staring in wonder at the idiot foreigner who made such a stupid rookie mistake.

Now there are red buttons to stop the tram. They also go ping, but very much quieter (electronic, not analog). So what's with the Zurich Tram Floor Ding Thing that goes Ping?

Am I the only one to trip over it? Will I get fined if I keep doing it?

Regards

Ian

That thing is called the Aargauerfalle. It is a trick to detect and show up Aargauers and other people who don't use the tram regularly. If you cause that bell to ding you will be registered and this lack of integration will be held against you should ever you apply for citizenship.

The floor bell, also known as "Aargauer Falle" or "Agglo Falle", has the purpose of warning locals that a foreigner (anyone from outside the city counts...) has entered the tram...

... or it is there for when trams are driving in reverse (https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/vbz/de/...s/Technik.html).

Ah ha Ian, now I can put the face to the name / perpetrator... we appear to travel on the same tram at around the same times - you're right - you do it every time

There's also loads of fun to be had, when in the company of a very serious swiss person, by jumping around on that bell going DINGDINGDINGDINGDING!DINGDINGDING! and them getting all red and ashamed and hoping that nobody recognizes them.

Dear Mr Ping Ding Ringer.

Wear those white socks with pride!

It would only be the English who would think not to offend.

Us southerners would be jumping up and down on the bugger and probably add a Haka just because the Ping Ding Ring wasn't loud enough!

See you on the 7!

So what about those yellow box things on the side of traffic lights without buttons? What are they for?

They had planned to put buttons there to allow pedestrians the chance to feel powerful and stop the traffic. Then they ran of buttons.

To let blind people know when it's safe to cross. They touch them and when the green man lights up the box vibrates and/or buzzes, thus letting them know it's safe to proceed.

Re: That Zurich Tram Floor Ding Thing Which Goes Ping

Follow up question: does touching the yellow protruding bit where it looks like a button should be make any difference to the light changing sequence?

No idea, but I suspect not. My guess is that the protruding bit is there to help the blind touch the box in the right place to feel the vibration.

Right now I'm picturing that one on the corner of Langstrasse and Hohlstrasse that women of certain profession lean against.

Now I understand why they wear high heels.

In a strange quirk of fate I was prevented this morning from waking the whole carriage from their commuting torpor because a lady was standing there already... with a double bass!

The thing covers three aspects actually:
- the buzzer lets them know where the box is
- the vibration tells them when it's safe to cross
- the arrow tells them which direction the vibration is for

I have to admit that this really bothered me too for a few years when arriving here over 20 years ago, and was too embarrassed to ask - didn't have EF then... THANKS EF!!!
