How do you pick up used furniture when you don't own a car?

Hello,

We recently moved to Zurich and just got an apartment. We would like to get some furnitures in used conditions, but don't have a car to transport them. What would be the best thing to do (in efficiency and cost)?

Rental car? Anything equivalent to U-Haul in the U.S? Pay someone to do it for us?

We have not converted our U.S. licenses to Swiss one.

Thank you for your help!

Mobility car / van ?
I second that. You need Click & Drive from Mobility and look for a location near you where they have Vans (Merc Vito). They tend to be booked out weeks in advance so it's a bit of a hit and miss. With weekdays having more availability. (Minimum 3 hours booking with click & drive)

Failing the mobility option which might not work for huge items, there are many places where you could rent a van for the day which might be more competitive than the big rental companies.

Keywords to search for: "umzug mietwagen zürich"

You can also try Ottos. (Available per hour)

Hi - I'm not sure about Zurich, but in Basel many of the secondhand furniture stores deliver the furniture for a modest fee.

Re: How do you pick up used furniture when you don't own a car?

Sometimes people selling furniture can deliver.

I have a van and have delivered and assembled furniture in the past. I have delivered items which the buyer did not see in advance. If a seller is honest about the condition and the pictures are of a decent quality it is not a problem.

Best to post a list of what you are looking for here and your budget. You may be surprised at the response. Then it may be worth your while to contact one of the "man with a van" ads here. The more things you can pick up in one place the more cost efficient it will be.

I have some dog beds for sale. You said you have a small dog. You can send me a PM with details if you wish.

Borrow one.

Buy one.

Rent one.

Steal one.

Plenty of options.

You do it exactly the same way as you would back home. You have the same options here as back home.

If there's one near you, you can also get vans from Ikea and they're usually easier and cheaper to get than directly through Mobility.
