Registering a car for residents parking that doesn't belong to you

I would like to borrow a friend's car for a couple of months and park it in Basel. I saw that you can buy an annual parking permit for 140CHFs at this website:

https://secure.bs.ch/mfk/formulare/E...e/step_1.xhtml

But when I enter the car details, I get the warning that the car isn't registered. It seems that if I continue, that I will register and get the parking permit, but as the car isn't mine, I wonder if this will cause problems for the owner e.g. if it will de-register from his canton and re-register in Basel? Does anyone know how this works?

Interesting. I´d expect your friend will get a bill from the Strassenverkehrsamt immediately after you register.
It is insured?

Re: Registering a car for residents parking that doesn't belong to you

You can only get zone permit for cars registered in your own name.

http://www.polizei.bs.ch/verkehr/str...parkieren.html

Verordnung über die Parkraumbewirtschaftung
(Parkraumbewirtschaftungsverordnung, PRBV)
Quote:
a) schriftenpolizeilich in Basel-Stadt gemeldete Anwohnerinnen und Anwohner für jeden auf ihren Namen und ihre Adresse in der entsprechenden Parkkarten-Zone eingelösten leichten Motorwagen, sofern das Fahrzeug in dieser Zone seinen Standort hat;

[...]

Re: Registering a car for residents parking that doesn't belong to you

In Zh the online service for buying a resident's permit is looking in the ZH STVA and sees the address the car is registered at.

If you are using a car that is not yours long term, you can go with the car's papers and something that says that the car has been loaned to you (like a letter from your friend) and go to the actual office that is administering the permits (which for ZH is near the library, keep forgetting the address). That's what I was told from that office I should do with my Greek car but I needed to translate the car papers and it was just easier (although much more expensive) to get a spot in my building garage for some months.

Try visiting the respective office and Basel (or call them) and see what they have to say. In ZH there are also provisions for replacement cars from a garage while yours is in for repairs, and can also be given for extended periods of time with help from the garage. So I guess a permit could be given, but not for a very long time.
