Second commuting car

Yet another thread looking for advice from the knowledgeable, honest-yet-polite forum member:

I'm looking to buy a second car which will commute a few times a week 200 round trip on the highway. It doesn't have to be big (first car is big enough), but economical to drive and maintain, safe and comfortable. budget < 15,000.

would an automatic diesel tick the correct boxes ?

Personally, I would move to petrol. Diesel is yesterday's fuel.

Maybe, but it's more economical per kilometer than petrol.

Decent being? How many kilometers before the car would need expensive maintenance?

If you need specific model advice/details - check out parkers.co.uk - their used reviews tend to be pretty good.

Generalisations:
- premium brands tend to be quieter, better built and more comfortable for longer journeys
- 5/6 cylinder diesels are smoother/quieter than 4 cylinder ones
- 15k will buy you a sub 100k km car - with 140ps diesel
- bigger cars tend to be quieter/more comfortable/better suited to long motorway journeys.
- saloons tend to be quieter than estates - and certainly than SUVs

For the second time today I'd be looking at a Volvo

Any Skoda with the 1.2 TDI motor?

The 1.2TDI engine was originally in the Lupo 3L. I know it well and actually works great as a second car around town, even on long journeys/abroad. It is amazingly economical, 80mpg etc. It is available in many Skoda models. In the Lupo it has an automatic (automated manual) gearbox which is really cool. The Lupo 3Ls are all very old now so I wouldn't recommend one to a non-techi DIY mechanic.

Re: Second commuting car

You could also consider as an alternative a premium car with higher mileage e.g. > 150tkm. In Switzerland are dirt cheap, still reliable and give a nice ride. Something like A6 3.0 diesel or 530d. Good thing is also if you get a good deal with lot of miles depreciation is modest. True these are larger cars but that comes with safety and comfortable ride.

Somethng like that? Price seems to be down to 13 something...

In 2 months I would have suggested to buy my wife's 2010 GTI with 77tkm on clock but you may need the car quicker

Re: Second commuting car

15k for a second commuting car!!?

About 6 months ago we bought a second car, a little 2008 honda jazz, auto / semi auto, 1.4 petrol.. Very practical, the lifting or folding rear seat is great, wife loves the car..
Issue with it is that it was outside during the huge hail storm couple of years ago so it's covered in little dents. However mechanically it's perfect and just breezed through it's MFK / control technique in December..

Price -- Well it cost less than what a colleague just paid for a new battery for his 5l V8 muscle car.

Re: Second commuting car

Well let's define few being 3-5 and 200km each which is 600-1000km per week. Driving that in a car like Jazz or any small city commuter does not sound very tempting. He wanted safe, reliable and comfortable ride. No offense but hard to think any car below 1000CHF fills the criteria. I assume the battery was below 1k...

I had a Volvo S80 some years ago and it was a great commuter. It is big and very very comfortable. On top of that everyone will be friendly towards you on the road.

Re: Second commuting car

You might want to check this site out: http://www.used-car-report.com/index.php?L=2

Something tells me you want an automatic something. Diesel is good for the highway (if there are any such roads in Switzerland. Most are congested stop and go). They do cost more to maintain and I wouldnt get a VW. Hopefully no other company is rigging its numbers and tests. Personally, I stayed away from diesels and got my self a CNG (erdgas) car. About as cheap as diesel to run. Also on many cars the automatics also eat gas. Some do do better however (if you believe the numbers).
