| | Re: Crashed the car and of top I get a fine?? Please help | Quote: | | | | | An AWD is not better then any 2WD in breaking and stopping in icy condition. It is just better in going forward when you want it going forward. | | | | | Thats frankly rubbish. The AWD wont make it brake faster, but it does one job really well - make sure the car continues to drive into the direction you point it. And that was the very issue in this case - a rear wheel drive car is just a real handful to drive on snow. The first half of this winter did I drive a Benz with rear wheel drive and as soon as it snows are all the electronic helpers interfering in order to make it drive straight. Top tip> if your car keeps on working overtime to make you drive a straight line is it time to slow down. Now I have an all wheel drive and when it was snowing so suddenly in Zurich this week was I having a much easier time than many other drivers on the road.
The one thing that still bugs me in the OPs continuous post is the total disconnect between "the car spun off the highway at 120 kmh and is completely trashed" on the one hand and "she did not endanger anyone, the fine is unfair!" on the other. The only reason nobody else was hurt was the completely random fact that there happened to be no car following closely when the wife lost control over the car.
We all make driving mistakes at times, but I am man enough to admit when I screwed it up. And there really is nobody else around to blame for this one...

This poster was in hospital, his wife had an accident on her way to see him, and all you can obsess about is the price of his car. Gotta feel sorry for you.

I feel a little foolish, because when I read this part, I assumed that the OP meant that he had 186,000 km on his car, meaning that he's had it a while, knows it and obviously takes care of it. I was more than a little surprised when I realized that it was how much the car was worth.
It is probably just me, but all I could think was "what a waste of money" And then he went out and bought an even more expensive car! It makes me think that the underlying reason for this post really IS just about what he drives, because the fine certainly can't be an issue for him.

I wonder whether on the night of the crash there had been warnings on the Swiss radio network about there being the possibility of ice on the roads? I also wonder whether this might have been one of these stretches which are marked as likely to be icy.
Again though, this could happen to anyone. All you can do is minimise the risk - not remove it entirely.
btw - the highway wasn't deserted. She was overtaking someone. She put that slower car in danger. Except since the story has been deliberately written to a) cause consternation over the value of the car, b) has changed from being the OP to his wife on very spurious reasons and c) tries to garner sympathy by pretending the OP was in hospital - I don't believe a word of it.

how would this actually work with a car that can drive itself, like the Tesla? You would probably still get the fine but would it be possible to claim that the vehicle is unsafe at the car manufacturer?
(I understand now why they are testing in California )

Oh dear me. This is still here.
I had imagined I would look in this morning and find it gone, some Moderator having discovered that the Thread was the work of some bored EFer with a second identity, perhaps even a retired trailing spouse like me, who was hoping to liven up his/her boring existance by putting the cat among the pigeons for a couple of days. So many variations on the original story to keep interest levels high...

Good question. The short answer is buy one from Apple, nothing ever goes wrong with their stuff, and even if it did, the police won't be able to recover the data.
The technological hurdles are only one aspect of self driving cars. Jurisprudence needs to get up to speed too. Though not specifically about self driving cars, here is a paper about "robot Law": http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.c...act_id=2737598
Although you can't pass responsibility for a misbehaving dog back to the breeder, presumably with a self driving car you could.
The interesting bit will be the transition period when the roads carry a mix of human and automatically controlled cars: Will the "last man in" rule in rear enders still apply when the last man in was a Human (with a reaction time of 0.7 - 3.0 sec) and (s)he hit a driverless car with lord knows what reaction time?

| | | | | Well, it did become the "Friday Thread", so mission accomplished!
It continues to support my hypothesis that these threads are created to keep the hits up on EF. Yet another "hostility on EF" thread
We had a couple contenders yesterday; Both started by newbs:
1. Rich, privileged, non winter driver ( where from I wonder????) complaining about how unfair the penalties and rules are in CH. The story morphs as the evening goes on (introduces idea of women drivers - maybe because the intl woman's day thread was getting traction earlier in the week)?
2. Posh (Sussex), petulant, IT challenged trailing spouse who comes out of the saloon, guns blazing, ready to take on all comers. White knight comes through later, reinforcing how mean EF is, groaning each post, and let's introduce the concept of rude Swiss (and French) while we are at it.
I'll go put my tin foil hat back on now.

You have hit the nail on the head.
Bully and mobbing in general is their reason for being on the board.
Based upon what they post up, their lives are clearly bereft of entertainment and friendship.
The majority of them are poor and educated in the softer topics, there are exceptions.p of course.
Many display avarice when someone references the lifestyle that goes with an income of CHF120-259K, as if it is boasting.
As you can see they are currently trying to attack a lady who crashed a nice car while driving to her husbands hospital.
A sad lot, with a few exceptions.
PS the above post by vfr is a clear case of em trying to rationalise their behaviours
