Fixed speed cameras in Basel?

Are they fixed to one position like in the UK or are they portable cameras?

I have to say I have driven around Basel quite often this week and haven't spotted any at all..

I am a bit worried about this whole speed camera lark, as, although I do like to stick to the speed limit, I will be driving a lot next month in Basel (about 10x more than I do monthly) and don't want to be getting caught slowing down from 70 to 50 when the limit suddenly changes.

Thanks

but that's the whole idea of the 50 zone sign.. to get traffic to slow down from that point on.

Re: Fixed speed cameras in Basel?

Considering that next month is the massive footballfest thing here in Basel, I doubt you'll be be getting a chance to do a lot of speeding in Basel.

There are fixed cameras all over, the one by my apartment flashes regularly with people speeding and blowing the red light.

There's also two on the Autobahn, one as you leave Basel, right by the Messe parking garage and one right after the split from the main town exit, heading towards Germany and France. Both of those are 80kmh limits.

not to mention the cluster of 4 just after you cross from Germany (autobahn) to come onto the section to the east of Basel itself

Re: Fixed speed cameras in Basel?

Don't forget Baumlihofstrasse from Riehen to Wettsteinplatz

That's the one you'll probably encounter the most.

Cunningly they are a nice grey colour and blend in nicely to the surroundings

Time to update the tomtom (note illegal in Switzerland) Invaluable if you do a lot of European driving + Covers the UK too, and handily pointed out a cam in Milan the other week!

I spotted two last week that are in a sneaky position and which I'd never (after driving along the same road for the past six years), seen before.

When driving from Zurich, Bern etc towards Basel, the two motorways, A2 and A3 converge just before the Liestal / Augst turn off. There's always been two fixed box type devices which everyone slows down for. BUT in the last month or so I noticed that threr are two small one mounted on the columns of the sign about 100 meters BEFORE the fixed one.

Here's a snap. (Taken by my wife before anyone asks.)

Re: Fixed speed cameras in Basel?

There are 2 scameras right outside my apartment in Binningen- I saw them putting them up the day I moved in- trying to tell me something maybe?!
Painted a fetching khaki green, they blend in with all the other road signs, lamposts etc.
These cameras were in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago- a Pakistani driver in a Belgian registered car (even though he lives in Switzerland) had been flashed 31 times in a 3 month period this year- he claimed that he thought the camera flashes were a warning to slow down... he got a 2000 CHF fine.

Got off lightly by the sounds of it

Yeah but I am saying if there is a camera literally 5 metres into the 50 limit zone and I am still slowing down from 70 I could be caught unaware.

I'll have to drive very carefully.

By the way thanks very much to all the people who replied, very very helpful!

Not when there is a national speed limit sign (i.e. the 60 erased), then 200 metres down the road it's 60 and then about 50 metres further down it's 50...Come ooooon.......................

Re: Fixed speed cameras in Basel?

About two months ago I was driving from Germany to Bern, along the A2 Autobahn between St-Jakob & Birsfelden when there was a very big flash. It was just before the end of the 80 Kph limit, traveling south-eastwards, and I was maybe driving at 95 Kph.
I remembered it was raining very heavily, and I hoped some other poor devil would get this speeding ticket, and not me.
Two months have passed and I now feel fairly certain: the flash I saw was from the 15 kilo volts arcing across the wet SBB insulators, holding up the live overhead cable, the railway track here is lower than the autobahn.
Well that's my theory.
