So the tunnel was build and paid for by Swiss, but the first one tothave a free ride are French and German politicians...

Merkel and Hollande, are the facto, the two bosses of EU. The three EU countries that will profit the most from these tunnels are Germany, Italy and France; not surprisingly, by far the most important trading and cultural partners of Switzerland.

It's all in the wording. It is the longest railway tunnel in the world without intermediate stations
so now we know the real reason the Porta Alpina was rejected

The Independent have now corrected their article to show Switzerland, not Sweden!

Article today in The Independent

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-a7059046.html

The new tunnel will help people travel through the area more quickly – cutting 45 minutes off the journey across Sweden

I believe it's to show what happens if you trap people in the tunnel for thousands of generations. That is what, with no light and no outside stimulus, people will evolve into. Kind of like living in Zurich.

Re: new Gotthard rail tunnel opens 1.6.2016

I'm impressed by the size of this project and the technical accomplishment it represents. The Swiss can really deliver when they have a project in mind. The Lyon-Turin tunnel which is key to European transit is still in planning...
What bothers me and I haven't heard anyone mention, is why we need always bigger tunnels, trains and transportation. Making bigger tunnels will make it easier and cheaper to transport goods in europe but how much is too much?
Most people agree that Spanish tomatoes and strawberries in winter don't make sense. Some businesses harvest potatoes in Belgium, ship them to Italy to wash them and back to germany for transformation...

I think if you look at the huge increase in road freight traffic over the past 20 years, you can understand why this tunnel is needed.
It was built to avoid the trucks filling the valleys on their way between north and south, the trucks are carried by the trains.
The Swiss didn't build it to be nice to the EU, they built it to stop pollution in the valleys, the SBB-CFF-FFS railway engines run on hydro-electric power.
As you mentioned the tunnel from Lyon to Turin is being designed to help east - west traffic.

I agree, it was the solution to limit road traffic. But are the road users paying the real price of the road? When a lorry crosses Switzerland for 100-. is it really covering the damage and nuisance it does? I feel we've subsidized road use for a long time as a support for the economy and instead of challenging the situation, built a bigger tunnel.

Re: new Gotthard rail tunnel opens 1.6.2016

Gosh, you`d think they could have at least hired some professional dancers and a good Choreographer for such an expensive and "elaborate" opening? Especially with everyone having taken the day off work in Bundesrat to attend, and importing Mama Merkel to the "show".

Looked pathetic, to me. No music. Dizzy looking characters jumping around with no co-ordination. People running thru the "set" as though looking for someone. Truly confusing. And boring! Or maybe I`m just old fashioned and this is what everyone loves watching?

Oh maybe, maybe, it was to save money? Just dish out some old rags and stuffed animal heads to construction workers, give them free booze, and tell them to "do their thing"?

Re: new Gotthard rail tunnel opens 1.6.2016

Looking at the photos not my cup of tea.

In the early 90s the tunnel near Geneva airport ( know it was not such a big project) was opened and all residents who applied could go to the inauguration. We went and we had a fantastic day, food and drink all day, fun for all the children with games etc -

I hope that the locals had the same treat and not just the invited politicians..

There is a rumour that the locals are getting triple glazing on their homes, to reduce the noise from the passing trains every 5 minutes....

Re: new Gotthard rail tunnel opens 1.6.2016

I just bought a ticket for the shuttles that will be running through the new tunnel during this weekend's opening festivities, and was very surprised at how cheap it was - only 8 CHF if you have a GA.

Just as a tip for anyone who might have been thinking about going but was expecting it to be expensive.
