Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich
Yesterday I decided to give the place in Lorrach a go what with it being open on a Saturday.
Summary. It is disappointing. It's poorly equipped and the roof leaks. I paid EUR84 to be there for 7 hours to do 4 hours worth of work which I didn't complete, negotiated down from over EUR100. Their quality of tools is low, and the selection of tools they have is poor.
It has a lot of potential. If they bought some decent gear and received mail order parts for instance it would be just fine.
The only reason I was able to get anything done is that on the off chance it was going to be very busy I grabbed what I thought might be useful from home (big socket set, general tool box, breaker bar, torque wrench, axel stands, wheel chocks). I forgot to bring my impact driver and they didn't have one. Cue wasted hours. I borrowed a half-inch drive t50 socket from them to avoid the lateral torque from my adapters and long breaker bar but the quality was so poor that it shattered (EUR 10 please...). Can you believe they didn't even have a single breaker bar themselves? I resorted somewhat unsatisfactorily to removing and destroying a stubbon hex bolt with a chisel and hammer.
To be honest my heart sank within the first 5 minutes when I asked for a torque wrench expecting a professional grade one that would go to 300NM and they handed me exactly the same EUR50 210NM one I have. Don't expect any Snap-on, just imagine you equipped a shed with a couple of ramps and the worst hand tools money can buy.
So my experiment in avoiding the wrath of my neighbours was unsuccessful, because I will be hammering at bolts outside my apartment one evening to finish the job.
Apparently they have only been open since October 2016.
If anyone does have a torque wrench that goes to 275NM I'd love to borrow it :-)
