Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

Just a quick review: Went to a self service garage last night to do change my brake pads (cost of doing it myself v Swiss garage is huge of course).

Great experience and the owners son called 'Castro' spoke perfect english and was very helpful. They have lifts and ALL the tools you could need.

21CHF per hour to rent the lift and tools to work on your own car/bike/whatever...

Garage is called Mataj SelfGarage in Winterthur. Easy to find on Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/UmWo18sYbeT2

That one over the border is interesting because it is open on a Saturday! I don't believe that this idea has made it to the Zurich-based self-service garages

That's good to know! Do they sell fluids as well? (e.g. oil, coolant, etc)? Think I may visit one of these weekends...

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

Yesterday I decided to give the place in Lorrach a go what with it being open on a Saturday.

Summary. It is disappointing. It's poorly equipped and the roof leaks. I paid EUR84 to be there for 7 hours to do 4 hours worth of work which I didn't complete, negotiated down from over EUR100. Their quality of tools is low, and the selection of tools they have is poor.

It has a lot of potential. If they bought some decent gear and received mail order parts for instance it would be just fine.

The only reason I was able to get anything done is that on the off chance it was going to be very busy I grabbed what I thought might be useful from home (big socket set, general tool box, breaker bar, torque wrench, axel stands, wheel chocks). I forgot to bring my impact driver and they didn't have one. Cue wasted hours. I borrowed a half-inch drive t50 socket from them to avoid the lateral torque from my adapters and long breaker bar but the quality was so poor that it shattered (EUR 10 please...). Can you believe they didn't even have a single breaker bar themselves? I resorted somewhat unsatisfactorily to removing and destroying a stubbon hex bolt with a chisel and hammer.

To be honest my heart sank within the first 5 minutes when I asked for a torque wrench expecting a professional grade one that would go to 300NM and they handed me exactly the same EUR50 210NM one I have. Don't expect any Snap-on, just imagine you equipped a shed with a couple of ramps and the worst hand tools money can buy.

So my experiment in avoiding the wrath of my neighbours was unsuccessful, because I will be hammering at bolts outside my apartment one evening to finish the job.

Apparently they have only been open since October 2016.

If anyone does have a torque wrench that goes to 275NM I'd love to borrow it :-)

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

I think your expectations were just a bit off to begin with to be honest!

We bring our own tools and in the off chance we were stuck for something they seem to have it.

Yes it is a big shed with some 2 post lifts, a tyre removing machine, floor space and some tools, it is not a professional kitted out garage with Snap On and Gedore sockets etc!

For what it is it suits our needs fine. We can bang and hammer at nuts trying to remove them as loud as we want without fear of the wrath of our neighbours.

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

I have since been to Mataj SelfGarage in Winterthur. It rocks. It makes the place in Basel look like the third world. Tools aplenty if you are missing something in your own tool kit. I had to drill out a bolt and they guy running it helpfully brought over extraction tools for me and provided instructions. I actually had my own but it illustrates how they operate. For CHF25 an hour to have the car in the air on a ramp I thought was really good. No charge for the bits and pieces I borrowed.

They are open until 9pm on a weekday and all day on a Saturday

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

We were at the one in Lorrach on Saturday for almost 6 hours, 50euros and the job was done fine as we had all the tools we needed and more with us.

Again, it depends on what you expect from a place. But I am glad to hear there is another one in Winterthur, the more there are around the country the better and hopefully the idea takes off!

Martin is a really cool guy with a soft-spot for American metal.

He has a good range of tools, and is helpful when needed. Also open on Saturdays.

I've been at Mataj a coupe of times, but the place is way too dirty and the tools are sub-par. They only take cash which is also annoying.

The best place is by far Santoro in Oerlikon, but he closes shop early and is only for weekdays. But it's cool to work next to Maseratis and is by far the cleanest and probably has the best quality tools. Also the most expensive.

I only go to Martin's place in Dietikon now, having tried all 3 above, which I think are all the DIY in the general Zurich area...

With an extension, maybe you can use your 210 to torque up to 275MN. I used to have access to an airline's QC torque wrench checker. The two cheap t-wrenches I was using at the time were surprisingly accurate.

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

On the 275...What I did was torque it up to 210, then breaker bar it a bit more. I hate myself for doing that, so I have bought a snap-on digital torque wrench (to be collected from UK at some point) which will allow me to properly tension my caliper retainer bolts.

I actually had no idea http://www.doityourselfgarage.ch/ was open on Saturdays. Their website states that reservations are available Monday to Friday, but I see now they are open until 2 on Saturday. I have Tie Rods and Tie Rod ends to change this Saturday so I'm all for trying another garage if it's better.

Thanks,

Andy

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

Continuing my tour of self-service garages around Zurich......

Today I went to Santoro in Oerlikon AKA doityourselfgarage.ch. You know the white space in the Matrix film where Neo and Trinity go to get guns? it's like that but with tools. And it's warm. And the toilet is not a 5 minute walk. And they have a Microwave. And there was an Aston Martin, Porsche, Ferrari and an old restored Lancia there for company.

I was there for 8 hours today changing the front lower wishbones on my Land Rover Discovery, which is something of a pig of a job. This time I went to to this garage purely because my good torque wrench needs sending for a service so I was without one that would go to 300NM which all of the front suspension jobs I have done seem to need. They had one, I used it and it worked (Mataj have a cheap rubbish torque wrench).

My bill today for 8 hours came to 340 franks (42.50/hr) which I think is a lot. My go-to garage for the last year has been the Mataj garage in Winterthur and I know that if I have been there today they would have charged me 170, i.e. half as much. Whenever I spend all day at Mataj (Those hazy summer days spend changing the intercooler or airconditioning condenser....) they give me a good price below their standard 25 franks all-in per hour rate. No such treatment at doityourself garage.

In summary, doityourself garage is 30% nicer but 100% more expensive. So rationally I would not go there again. Mataj Garage in Winterthur offers best value for money if you have everything you will need in your own tool collection.

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

Hi all,

I can report that Mataj self garage is in the course of being refurbished:
  • Everything is being painted (including the floor)
  • They've cleaned out loads and loads of old stuff
  • 3 x brand new 3.5 ton lifts have been installed, which means that they now have 6 lifts compared to the previous 5, and 4 of those are 3.5 ton-rated. So less waiting
  • Extra lighting has been installed making the place much brighter
  • A toilet has been installed inside the garage itself

In terms of rate the advertised price is still Sfr25 an hour but I tend to find I get a better rate if I work in the evening when they are quieter. They're open until 9 in the week and 9-6 on Saturdays.

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has used Mataj since the refurbishment? Do they still have the same tools, or have they now added more to the collection? Looks like I'm going to need to do my rear discs and pads soon. Unfortunately the bearings are integral with the discs, so I'll need a torque wrench that goes up to 300Nm and a caliper wind back tool. Are they likely to have these or would I be better off going to Santoro?

Re: Self Service Garage Experience review - Zurich

They now own “a” torque wrench!

It doesn’t go up to 300. I do however have a 350NM snap-on digital torque wrench which you may borrow if you can get to Thalwil station with a pack of beer
