Just had a thought (that will be deeply frowned upon here), would it not be possible to have your partner take the rap la Chris Huhne? Probably too late this time, but something to consider for the future. ...
Probably not something to consider. Risk analysis. Chance of getting caught, low - consequence of getting caught, high. Perverting the cause of justice is a serious criminal offence. Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce got eight months at HM pleasure.

Some idiot rear-ended me exactly like that last week. Classic bumper-to-bumper traffic, clearly he was not paying attention. I would bet he was checking his phone/texting too.

Luckily, I did not bump into the person in front of me because I kept the distance. Although nobody got hurt and all the damage to my car was 100% covered by his insurance, it was still a major PITA - scary, I missed my meeting, I drove 7 hours for nothing, I had to deal with insurance, mechanic, cops, etc.
I still remember a tip from my driving instructor - to avoid rear-ending the car in front in the event of a knock-on collision in standing traffic, always stop with enough distance so you can see the rear tyres of the car in front. It's not far enough away to create a big gap in the traffic but far enough to make a difference.

Obviously this won't matter a jot if there is enough force and speed coming from behind but in a bog-standard low speed shunt, you should have enough distance not to smack into the next car.

The added bonus is if the car in front breaks down you also have enough room to swing round and drive away without any further maneuvering.

This is an ancient custom amongst the Germanic peoples. The traditional name for it is "Auffahrunfall". In olden times it was only celebrated when fog, or school holidays, occured. The modern trend is to practice this custom without dependence on the pagan calendar or the weather, but rather to depend on technology to predict the occurrence. There is some debate amonst linguistic scholars whether the spelling should be changed to one of "Appleunfall", "Androidunfall", or "Appunfall".
Aufmerksamkeitsdefizitunfall.

Aufmerksamkeitsdefizitunfall.
Nah, I have Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit and I am strangely very focussed when driving. More like Hirndefizitsunfall...
