Insuring a car in the uK whilst living in CH

Does anybody have any tips for insuring an owned car in the UK whilst living in Switzerland. I am finding that most companies will not cover a person unless you have UK residency.

Re: Insuring a car in the uK whilst living in CH

Do you have a UK address that the car is linked to via V5 C log a book and road tax etc (and your UK licence if you still have one)?

If yes, I can recommend a firm. If no, then I don't think I can help.

By the way, a Swiss licence is considered an international licence not a European one and that brings with it another issue. I have insurance for my UK car because I split my time (albeit unevenly) so the company were happy that the car was on the drive of my UK property and I didn't intend to drive it to CH. However if I swapped my UK licence then they couldn't insure me. I fully disclosed everything to the insurers and they were very happy to help.

Long story short, Mr Rufus drives in his Swiss licence here (and in our Swiss car when in UK) and I drive us in the UK car when we are there. Pain in the bum, but it's OK. I don't need to drive here but we do when in the UK. My UK licence is valid in Europe as it always has been.

Googling EXPAT car insurance will bring you some possibilities.

To be added to my fiancée's UK insurance as an occasional driver, he premium would have increased 3.5 fold, the only option was Aviva (ex Norwich Union) who insured me for over 10 years when I lived in the UK. OTOH she can be added to my insurance in France or Malta on standard terms, neither country caring where my license is from.

It is a right pain and effing stupid.

I have to by law have a Swiss license as have been here 1 year. Even though I commute to UK every weekend and drive to and from UK airport in my UK car.

Technically though, you still have a UK license. It's stored for you at DVLA because the Swiss send it back there.

Try checking the online DVLA hire car code thingy and see what it says. Maybe you can order a duplicate/replacement UK one?

Regards

Nope. I phoned both the DVLA and the MFK (?) And both said no, it's impossible to have both a UK and a Swiss licence because of the reciprocal system of (almost) no questions asked licence swapping.

It's doubly aggravating because Aussie friends of ours swapped theirs and got their Oz licences back with a sticker on them saying not valid in CH.

UK insurers also view a CH licence as an international one, because EEA, making it even harder to get insurance. Mind you, some of the ones I called were initially adamant that CH was in the EU until I got a couple of sheepish calls back. I tried the Schengen and same land mass as France and Germany approach: nothing. My last ditch "but Switzerland is in Eurovision" argument fell on stoney ground too.

Ian, how did you insure your UK car please? Or are you driving it on Swiss insurance?

Re: Insuring a car in the uK whilst living in CH

Just to update this thread SAGA will insure over 50 year old Non UK residents without a UK license for a car in the UK if you have an address in the UK. The also allow 365 days of foreign use.
If your a Swiss resident you can't drive the car in Switzerland unless your moving to CH.
