| Thinking it through, it makes perfect sense for the SBB from time to time to restrict the option to spontaneously upgrade to first class travel on certain routes, or at certain times etc.
Otherwise the nimble fingered amongst us would simply not buy a first class season ticket and normally travel second class. However, if the going gets rough, for example no seats left in the second class compartment, hundreds of school children with skis crashing about etc. etc. they'd simply conjure up a smartphone and buy their way out of this temporary but uncomfortable situation, and thereby potentially causing "genuine" first class travelers a problem by cluttering up "their" carriages and taking "their" seats. | |

That is exactly what I use it for! That’s surely a legitimate use and 1st class on that route at the times I travel isn’t normally that busy.
I just looked at the route again when the occupancy is forecast to be 1/3 in both classes and the option still isn’t there. Also it doesn’t make sense if you look at DB’s post that you can upgrade for Zurich to beyond Pfäffikon on the same train.
