Let's do a poll about winter tyres as this topic is coming up about 25 times each winter.

Re: Do you need winter tyres?

In the olden days, we put the tyres with the deepest tread on the front wheels, so that in bad conditions the car could be steered correctly.

Today the argument is that the tyres with the best tread are placed on the rear wheels so that the car remains stable in bad road conditions.

To me, the two arguments have similar merit. Are there any experts around that can explain why the second option is better?

Almost all of the steering and roughly 60% of the braking are done by the front tires, even if the car is RWD. Where do you thing grip is a priority?

Unless you start doing silly stuff in a corner the rear tires basically just go along for the ride (with a FWD car).

Where would you rather have a blowout, front or rear?

Re: Do you need winter tyres?

I agree with you completely, but as I wrote, the current thinking is that good tyres on the rear wheels keep
the car stable and ensures the rear wheels follow the front wheels, - and off the road on a snow covered corner...!

Re: Do you need winter tyres?

You missed the option - no they aren't needed nor a legal requirement, but the compound is designed to work better below 7 degrees than a summer tyre. Given it's below 7 degrees in the 'lowlands' from December to February and longer the higher you go, it makes sense for pretty much everyone to have them.

I'm not sure what to think of the continental tests (those are the ones you are talking of right?)

The main thing is not to be overdriving your grip. With all the ASC and such I see a lot of people who's driving habits would have maimed or killed them not all that long ago. I am more comfortable with a car which tends to oversteer than one which pushes.

I've seen quite a few rear wheel lifts under braking on the highway, all SUV or minivans, all that weight up high scares the bejesus out of me, but people just seem to love them.

But we don't buy "double the units". My summer tyres last twice as long as they would if I used them 12 months a year instead of 6 months a year.

Ahhhh but winter tyres wear out quicker because they're made of crumbly cheese

Yes, but as the Swiss tires are of such high quality, they last twice as long as other tires
