One thing I try to avoid when buying a used car is anything with an engine that uses a timing belt vs a timing chain. In looking at the replacement interval guide (link included below) belts should be replaced around every 95 km. If you buy a car with the belt change due soon or overdue, you're probably looking at a major maintenance cost. If you risk running on an overdue belt and it breaks bye-bye engine - bent valves and piston damage. Basically, you'd need a new engine.

Only if it's an interference engine.
