Send boxes of personal items abroad

I am looking to send boxes of personal items such as books and clothes to another european country. What would be the best way of going about this? Can anyone recommend a company who could help?

Might be worth exploring SWISS's baggage as cargo option. But my feeling is that it will be expensive.

It might help people to give you some ideas if you mention the country + area (unless it is top secret).

Re: Send boxes of personal items abroad

When I moved back to the UK last April I looked into the cheapest way of doing this...

And discovered that it was to send the items with the Swiss Post Office.

I packed the items up and weighed the boxes at home, and used the online form to create the 'waybill' (you can find it here: https://www.post.ch/en/private/sendi...arcels-private)

I then took the boxes into the post office, they weighed them, checked the waybill and then I paid for the postage. On one occasion my parcel was slightly heavier than I thought and we had to create a new waybill because it had tipped over onto a different price bracket... but apart from that it went very smoothly.

I didn't have to pay any customs fees either, although that was probably because the value of the goods was not that high.

Re: Send boxes of personal items abroad

Kill two birds with one stone and send your stuff from the nearest town/village in Germany using DHL.

1) it's way cheaper (check here)
2) if your destination "European country" is within the EU you won't have any issues with customs holding your packages

for EU tarrifs are as follows:
  • up to 2kg = €14
  • up to 5kg = €16
  • up to 10kg = €21
  • up to 20kg = €32
  • up to 32kg = €45

This ... many of us regularly drive with spare capacity in our cars- and some might be prepared to help out. We certainly do, both ways- whenever we can.

You probably have figured this out already but in case not, I ship from France or Italy, not Switzerland. I ship quite a bit of things to the US and Swiss postal rates are just ridiculously expensive compared to French or Italian postal rates. From France I can ship 10 lbs for a flat 45 Euros. Italy is a bit more expensive but can't remember the exact rates.

I've compared those with big shipping companies' rates but they don't usually ship just one box here and there. Hope this helps.
