Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

Hi All,

I had a minor incident today in parking when I was reversing my car it touched other car behind me. It was indeed my fault but fortunately car just touched the frond guard and scratch was hardly visible. I could even not feel it and see it clearly

But the lady asked for my driving license. I thought that you need to fill insurance forms and complete the formality paperwork etc

Apparent we both took picture but even in picture nothing was clearly visible

My question is can see file demage claim with my insurance company with my driving license copy only ?

Since the demage is hardly visible and can not even felt on the surface as it was not a crash but just touch of two cars

Could someone help here how to go about it. I have no issues as long as it is this repair just don't want to get ripped off with few thousand CHF

I have a brand new car but I also cannot see any demage in my car at all .

Could some one provide some input here how it works

Regards
Ig

Re: Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

Had that recently with a parked car. Left a note on that car with my phone number, called my insurance, got a case number, got a call from the other car owner and gave him the case number.

No idea what a driving license has to do in this story, maybe she wanted to see if you have one? If not she may have called the police?

Re: Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

Dear Reogner

I was also surprised that she just asked my my license copy and drove. I did take picture of both cars but as I said there was No damage

Just curious how this works I would still be happy to pay for the actual damage which I know was not there but just wanted to understand if somehow people can use my license copy to directly claim insurance

I can´t imagine how that would work. If she would contact your insurance by asking, they´d be in serious breach of data protection by giving her any information.

Re: Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

You hit her car.

She has the right to claim.

She doen't need a copy of your license to claim, just the number of your car.

Completely agree with you Tim but if there is damage for sure she has right and in that case the process would be that we mutually agree and fill the insurance claim form sign it and exchange copies and she can then file that claim with my insurance company which would work

But without any visible damage on either car and with only copy of the license will she be able to claim

?

This makes no sense at all.

No we both were in hurry and we could not see and find any damage so I did not even think it required a claim or any repair

The insurance is not on the driver's license, Tom. The only reason the other one might have wanted to see it was for the name. If Indianguys name is Müller ......

In an other post you said the damage was hardly visible = there is a damage. And some people are fussy with their cars. And husbands are a pain in the neck with their cars .... in case she had "Daddies car".

Making a copy (these days a photo) of a licence is simply an easy way to properly and formally identfy the driver of the other vehicle

The driver may not be the same as the owner, thus just using the vehicle registration plate would not tell her necessarily who you were

As for the "no damage", you said there there was a 'scratch'.
That is damage, for which she is entitled to have repaired as it was caused by you

Whether she does or not is her decision, but she is entitled.

In Switzerland normally everyone has 3rd party liability insurance, so normally your financial limit is capped at excess of your 3rd party liability insurance.

The proper proceedings is she would tell her insurance company, they contact you, you tell your insurance company, and wait for the bill.
Your insurance company 2rd party liability policy covers all the damages to the other partys propery, and sends you a bill for the amount of your excess.

Re: Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

Leave it to your insurance to sort out. When you fill your account of the incident you can show the photos and state there was no damage.

And that will, most likely, be that.

btw - at an accident, never admit liability.

Ouch, unless your insurance company immediately informed the others cars keeper this is considered as an hit and run. Leaving simply a note on the car is not o.k. Income based monetary penalty and at least a 1 month driving ban.

Do make a claim one needs just the cars license plate number and nothing more. The driving license helps to identify you as a driver. You are obliged by law to give her your name and address. Art. 51 SVG.

Hardly visible, means visible, means there is damage, means she can get it fixed. Plastic bumper covers are around CHF 400 to 800 replace. If a parking sensor is damaged a bit more.

Are you talking about personal liability insurance? Not their's jobs. It is the cars liability insurance which will pay.
But if the driver is not the person paying the cars insurance, then whoever pays the cars insurance may claim financial damages from the driver in case of a bonus hike. The bonus hike may be paid under certain conditions by your personal liability insurance.

Actually, I called the police to report this, exactly to avoid hit and run claims. And I did also inform my insurance right after that.

If she wants to file a claim, you generally need the name of the driver.

Re: Can anyone claim insurance with my driving license copy

OP, your insurance won't pay for any kind of claim without examining it first. At the very least the garage will have to send detailed pictures and descriptions of the damage, and the insurance might decide to send a broker to examine it in person.

No garage in its right mind would do the repairs and send the bill to the insurance without making sure it will be paid back first.
