OK to drive US car with just insurance?

My US car (made in Germany) will be arriving soon. Am I able to drive it in Switzerland once I have the car insurance? It will have US plates on the car. I would get the homogulous changes done immedidately, however I have to go out of town for business. My company will only give me a rental till mine arrives. Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

GB

Re: OK to dirve US car with just insurance?

I suggest you do a search on some of the other threads about this subject,
You won't get insurance in Switzerland on your car while it has US plates on it, And your US insurance won't cover you in Europe.

So answer is No.

Re: OK to drive US car with just insurance?

I brought my old car over from the us and ran it here on us plates for a year. I also had swiss insurance. thank god. I then totaled the car and they paid me out the whole value of the car on the swiss market what was about 30 percent more than the us value.
To make a long story short yes you can get swiss insurance and drive on us plates. You have to as your us insurance is not valued here. Hope that helps.

Re: OK to drive US car with just insurance?

I got this once from my insurance guy:

Unfortunately I can't give you a coverage for third party liability on your british plates cause of the bilaterales contracts CH-EU. But you can buy a boarder insurance directly at the boarder (third party only) for 3 to 6 month. You can extend the coverage month by month and the costs are CHF 250.-- per month.

What's the limit on when you should get it modified? Within 1 year?

Zuritel are part of the Zurich Insurance Group, and as far as I can tell they don't trade with that name in Switzerland, They do however use the brand in Italy and Austria.

Zurich have been quoted before on this forum as refusing to insure cars without Swiss plates, but hey if you can get them to insure you then good luck and yes if you have insurance you can drive your car around on US plates for a while.

However, I would advise that you plan extra travel time to any destination, because you can expect to get stopped by the police on a regular basis

Yes one year.
You can apply for an extension but it is hard to find a credible reason...
