VW Key duplication from key number

I have lost my VW key. However I have a good photo of the blade, and also the VW key number.

Can (or rather will) anyone in the Zurich area cut me a key on the spot for a reasonable price (VW want 75chf for next day).

I am not worried about the electronic immobiliser thingy in the key or reprogramming the car. Just want the mechanical key in this instance.
Thanks.

I don't think so. I tried it with a Citroën key a few months back and they wouldn't do it.

Re: VW Key duplication from key number

They won't do it and it wouldn't work anyway. There's some electronic jigermipokery in the the black handle bit that is needed to start the car...

Re: VW Key duplication from key number

I had a VW key duplicated (without chip) at mister minit for around 30 CHF.
THe guy didn't even know there is chip there, which confused me. I had to study up a little to get it working to turn the ignition.

I can handle all the electronics (famous last words)... There are several ways, people selling kits in HK for $10, etc, to delux solder on kits for 55 euro from Berlin. You solder it on somewhere and it emulates the immobiliser...

I planned ahead, photographed the key, and have had an expert on ebay decode the key number from the image, etc. I am bad with keys, and as the car only had one (cheapo 700chf Ab Platz job I bought in 2011 or so) this seems an obvious precaution.

Simeon, that is a very good price. Just phoned the guy at Zurich HB but he requires a mechanical key to duplicate, and not a picture or the key code.

The cheapest option seems to be to order a key from the picture and hack the immobiliser. With VW it means 2 days anyway, ordering a key. plus towing the car in to get it reprogrammed (TCS would help here).

If only it was a Mk1 Ford Escort. Ask around the pub. Someone would have a mailbox key that fit to duplicate.

I had a Ford Escort once. About a 1970s model
It only needed a screwdriver in the lock to turn the lock

I think you should be happy the VW has a bit more security than the Ford Escort had

Anyway, 75 CHF for a new key is 'cheap'.
Many cars are around 300 CHF and more....

Re: VW Key duplication from key number

I worked for a company with a fleet of Ford Mk 2 Cortinas. After a year of use when the keys stated to wear, they could be interchanged - any key would open and start any Cortina...

Re: VW Key duplication from key number

Just discovered that a bloke in Northampton will delete the immobiliser function from the engine management unit for about £50 while you wait.

That is a really attractive option as it gives you a solution you can quickly move from car to car. The ECU pop out nicely on these cars, whereas the immobiliser is hidden away. No soldering etc.
