Second Hand Car buying (Not another similar thread..:-))

Dear friends,

First of all I did check many related threads but could not find the specific answer I am looking for...:-)

I am planning to buy (already signed the contract) a second hand Citroen C4, details below.

----
CITROEN Grand C4 Picasso 2.0i 16V Edition Automatic
2008, grau, 92388 km
CHF 5800.-
Wagennummer: 59.062.193.128
----

I am buying this from an add published in autoscout.
The related add is not anymore online, probably because I signed the contract yesterday.

The name of the guy is [name removed for privacy reasons] near Schwamendingen, the place looked a bit shady, large warehouse with many soft drinks and some cars half opened.

He wanted us to pay ~ 800 CHF upfront as booking, after which there are some small external defects which he will fix + servicing and cleaning, get the MFK done and then deliver me the car next week, upon which I pay the remaining 5000 CHF.

He also gave me the greenish brown car paper with the previous owner's name and details.

I did not pay the 800 CHF yesterday, instead requested for an orange or red slip, which he also provided (a red slip with handwritten bank account details).

I am not sure how to verify all these transaction will be safe (Reason to worry is that this is not a big garage and the guy and his associates look a bit shady + the price 5800 for a 2 litre 7 seater picasso < 93 K kms is quite attractive)

Yes I also had the test drive and it felt ok (apart from the cleanliness and some external scratches).

1. Should I take this vehicle form and the contract of selling to 'Strassenvehrkasmt' just to see if they can confirm this is a valid deal?

2. Should I go to police for checking that this is valid?

3. Should I just just believe that all will be ok?

4. Something else...

Regards,
Akki

If you've already signed the contract then you aren't "planning to buy", you have "committed to buy".

It isn't too unreasonable for the garage to want some money down before they prep the car and do an MFK for you. By the sounds of it he has given you the registration papers (though he'll need that if he is going to do the MFK for you).

Strassenverkehrsamt won't tell you anything about if the garage is a shady one, neither will the police.

You can check moneyhouse, and google for people who've complained about the garage online.

Lots of these places run on a shoestring, they may seem shady to you, but if you buy at the bottom of the market then you don't generally get free WiFi, and a coffee served to you in the customer lounge.

Can't comment on shadiness but I just signed for a car on Friday from a used dealer.

We agreed conditions, he printed the contract and I paid 1000CHF deposit. Similar conditions to you - he will have a service and MFK done, get plates for me and then I pick it up and pay the rest.

Seems like usual practice in this country as you can't just go, buy a car and drive it away instantly like in the UK for example.

You've signed the contract so you're tied in... whether you've already paid or not doesn't make any difference I don't think...

Re: Second Hand Car buying (Not another similar thread..:-))

The only time I haven't put down some money first is when the sellers knows me from previous dealings, which I find reasonable.

I have also bought with no recent MFK, but with the written promise that the dealer will take it in and pass it when the invite comes, though usually they can do it beforehand given a couple days' notice.

Re: Second Hand Car buying (Not another similar thread..:-))

I only buy from little, "shady" garages When I decide to buy it, I get the contract and I pay full price! A day or two later I pick it up, mot-ed and so far all of them did the registering/changing number-plates for me as well (as I only have to inform insurance and they send all info directly to Strassenverkehrsamt).

These garages are not shady. They are down to earth guys who put their money where it should be put: In tools, low sales- and repair-prices. They even get their hands dirty while they know what they're doing

The seller may be the least of your worries.

Re: Second Hand Car buying (Not another similar thread..:-))

Just to continue with the story...at last last week the car was delivered and it supposedly passed MFK. The first drive back home the gear was slipping and car was going directly to 3 gear...in a slope if the car stops then the car can not go up anymore...Thankfully it all happened on day 1, took it back to garage, I did not pay the balance, told will pay by bank transfer...it seems the garage passed the MFK with original parts and then took out everything they can from the car...bloody thieves...whatever spoke with my legal insurance and the garage gave me back my deposit....phew what a loss of time and effort...
