Driving a Swiss registered car with a U.K. License

Hi
Would anybody know if a person with a U.K. Drivers license can drive a Swiss registered car, would they have to take out insurance. I have no idea how it works here.

You don't need a license to drive a car !

In general Swiss cars with plates are insured for anybody legaly allowed to drive them, as opposed to the UK system where it is the person who is insured for a particular car to drive.

Perfectly o.k.
It is just the U.K. system that is totally weird and strange.

PS: But it is advisable to be able to present a valid license when stopped by the police. If you have lived in Switzerland for more than 12 Month a foreign license is no longer valid in Switzerland and some countries where you need a license valid in your country of residence.

Also be careful crossing borders outside of Switzerland unless you own the Swiss registered car.

To be more specific: If an EU resident (citizenship and driving license do not matter) drives back into the European Union with a Swiss registered car (or any other non EU registered car) they may be found guilty of smuggling, tax evasion, car may get impounded, and a huge fine has to be paid.

Slightly incorrect, as it applies to "residents" and not "citizens".

I am a British citizen wishing to hire a Swiss car when I come to Switzerland for a holiday in my daughter's Swiss apartment. She has no car and also lives in England. We both own current UK driving licences. Will we have a problem hiring a car and driving on our licences, even crossing the border to France or Italy and returning to Switzerland a few days later or even same day after a shopping trip?

Re: Driving a Swiss registered car with a U.K. License

As already mentioned, when you leave Switzerland you must declare the Swiss car, and receive permission to temporarily import it.

You will see that hiring a car from France, eg Basel or Geneva airports, is much cheaper than hiring in Switzerland. Then you must declare it when entering Switzerland.

Let me rephrase it, and strip it to the bare relevant minimum:

You are two persons which are both EU residents (speak your home address is in the EU). You will be in Non-EU-Country for holiday and wish to rent a car during this time with which you intend to drive in the Non-EU-country and also in EU countries. You do not intend tor drive the car back to your place of residence and return it there.

In this case, as you are EU residents and wish to drive in the EU you should rent a EU registered car. This can be easily done at the French sides of Basel and Geneva Airports and may also be possible on request at Zurich airport.

If you, as EU resident (people which have their home in the EU) with a non-EU registered cross the border into an EU country, and do not intend to drive to your place of residence, you may do a tax, customs, and duty violation. The car may get impounded and you pay a fine which could be a multiple of the cars value.
