Deadline for submitting car accident report

Hi everybody,

I tried to google but I don't know german so I couldn't find anything regarding my question. And my question is:

How much time do you have for submitting the damage accident report to your insurance after the car accident ?

Thank you

Please don't send it to my insurance

Actually you bring your car to your garage, tell them the culprits insurance details and they do the rest themselves.
You should always bring it in to your garage - even if you decide not to have stuff fixed. You are entitled to decide that and still get the money.

Really? Shouldn't you contact the insurance company in the first instance?

Many have named, approved garages for repairs.

To the OP: I think a few weeks is okay but it may depend on your insurer. Why not phone them and ask?

Re: Deadline for submitting car accident report

It may well depend on your insurance - it will most likely be in the General Insurance Provisions document, not the simpler policy document.

In my case:

Quote:
The eligible claimant must inform XXXX immediately in the event of an event involving loss/damage.
and

Quote:
The insured may not acknowledge any claims by the injured party or make any payments on his own initiative.
and

Quote:
The eligible claimant must make it possible for AXA to inspect the damaged vehicle before it is repaired. Instructions for repairs may be issued only with AXA’s approval.
So at least for my policy both of the comments above are plain wrong, sorry.

Well, it always worked like that for me when people decided to run their vehicles into mine uncontrolled. But maybe my garages are better/more client-friendly than those of others. (And yes of course my garages would let the culprits insurance have a look at my car before working on it if they wanted to - which they not always do, depending on what the garage tells them - but I had nothing to do with that either. Except Zürich-Versicherungen, they want the victims to go show their car to them, which amongst other things I could say about Zürich-Versicherung is pretty cheeky.

Re: Deadline for submitting car accident report

tnx everybody

I didn't asked my insurance company because it's located in some other country with different rules and laws...I'll try to clarify what I really meant:

I scratched (really minor scratch) some car on the parking lot in front of a store and I waited some time but nobody was coming so I left the paper on the windshield with short explanation of the accident, licence plate number, mobile number etc. and that I just went quickly to the store

I parked next to that car and went away for 20 minutes and when I got back to the parking lot, the other car was not there

and after more than 30 days, he filled the accident report to his insurance company

of course, I'll pay for the damage because it was my fault, if I didn't want to pay, I wouldn't left the paper on his windshield with all my information, but 30 days is a lot and there are few other "shady" things so I just wanted to know if there is some deadline for submitting the report if he tries to show some other scratch as a part of this accident

Ahhh it was your fault? It should be reported to your insurance asap. But they will surely get back to you as soon as the payment is being claimed and ask for your "side of the story".
To avoid "shady" things in future, you best take pictures of what dammage you've caused and send them to your insurance as well.
Good luck

tnx

Re: Deadline for submitting car accident report

You are lucky in a way, it could be called "Fahrerflucht" which is a criminal offence.

Normally you should inform your insurance if you cannot find the driver, leaving a note alone is not sufficient (which is what my insurance told me after a similar incident).

My insurance expects me to call them and also to get the car viewed by them before I can go to a garage to get it fixed

Actually in Switzerland you need to inform the police if the damaged person can't be identified. Failing that, after 24 hours it's Fahrerflucht.
