I'm looking at a motorbike, it's currently registered (canton ZH, so same as where I'm based) but had the last MFK in May 2013. It's a 2006 bike if that makes a difference.

Am I going to arrive at the Strassenvekehrsamt to register it and be told I can't ride it until it has a fresh MFK? My car was registered in 2011 and hasn't been called for MFK yet but I understand this is normal, I thought the test was every three years after the first one?

Is there actually a proper law on this or does it just depend when the STVA decide they have a spare slot and call you in?

No (though it was like that until some years ago).

I took a bike off the road when the MFK invite came, several years later I put it back on the road.

The invite (for a month later) came a month or two after I re-registered it last summer.

So I didn't buy the bike in the end (the seller wouldn't come down on the price enough) so I bought a different one. It had the last MFK in July 15 (in Kanton ZG) so let's see when the invite comes through.

As I'm still waiting for the first MFK on my Nov 2011 registered car I guess it might not be bang on the two year interval

There may be no rule as such but a trip to the office might just trigger it.. It worked that way with a car we bought, it's "control technique" in these parts was 18 months past and the kind lady at the office noticed and just decided to book in for the following week.

It passed anyway so no drama .. But just might happen that way for you.
