Qualified in Bangernomics ? What car should I get ?

Here are the requirements...

Not more than 6k chfs .. to last 3 years (so I'll be looking for a fresh(ish) mfk).. and then throw it away
Needs to transport 4 people plus a mid size dog (so Combi or 4x4)
Won't be driven more than 7k per year, mostly short, urban hops
I don't care about fuel consumption
I'm not too fussy about year and/or kms on the clock.. if it 'looks right'
I'm not too bothered by performance.. but don't want a tractor

Ideas ?

simply visit car-dealers, look around, make a pick, have it checked by someone if you can't do it yourself, buy it.
I buy all my cars like that.

Check with Dougal whether he considers a Saab 9-5 (with fresh MFK) to be a good idea.

Saab 96, Sonett, or Fiat Panda 141 would be my choices.

Re: Qualified in Bangernomics ? What car should I get ?

Check out Mobility, and their taken out of service cars,I got in 2011 my dentmobile aka Renault Mégane 1.6v hatchback for 6'500.-, 50thou km and only 5 yrs old.... why so cheap..... the name dentmobile should give it away. The roof and bonnet are full of hailstone dents, and because if that it was taken out of service, I don't mind that and the dents haven't done any damage other than esthetically, suits me to a T to drive such a car.
The Mobilty cars are really well maintained and serviced.

Another shout for the Saab 9-5. They're great cars and fit the bill perfectly. I regret selling mine, and you don't get much more bang for your buck than these. Take your choice of engine:

I would go for a Subaru Legacy Estate, comfortable, reliable and with a few mod cons.

Avoid the 3.0 diesel like the plague.

The best ones are any of the 2.3 engine ones.

You'll note there wasn't a 3.0 on my shopping list.
