Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

Good evening,

I am British. I have a job offer in Geneva. I will begin the job in August. I will arrive in Switzerland in early July.

I want to buy a camper van from a private seller on autoricardo.ch or elsewhere before I have an address in Switzerland.

In order to buy, do I need my Swiss work permit first? Do i also need an address in Switzerland to buy a vehicle in Switzerland?

Thank you in advance for any advice.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

If you want to put Swiss licence plates on it then you'll have to have an address here and a Swiss permit for the registration. You will also need Swiss vehicle insurance and again, will need a Swiss address/permit for that.

https://www.ch.ch/en/registering-vehicle/

https://www.ch.ch/en/cars-and-other-vehicles/

Unlike the UK Swiss licence plates don't stay with the car, but are changed according to who owns the car and where they live - new plates will be issued by your cantonal vehicle registration office.

So yes, you could buy without an address or permit, but wouldn't be able to drive the vehicle until the registration is done. The only way to move it would be on a trailer.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

If I choose to bring a left hand drive vehicle purchased and insured in the UK, am I correct in saying that I can use it in Switzerland for 1 year before having to get Swiss plates?

Is this the case for all vehicles entering Switzerland from all countries in Europe?

Thank you.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

Yes, but then you run into insurance problems. Swiss insurers won't insure without a Swiss plate and UK insurers are unlikely to give you cover as you'd be a resident here and not in the UK. And you may need to declare it at the border.

Yes.

Whether or not you can register and insure it is another matter.

No address = NO.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

Meanwhile you could rent a car for a month or so that would be cheaper

Try looking in france or germany for it, specially on the airports!

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

When you register you should get a piece of paper labeled: Wohnsitzbestätigung / Attestation de domicile (or similiar) if not request one. It will allow you to open bank accounts and register your car.

Be aware of the following customs problems:

As an EU resident you can not simply bring a non EU taxed and plated car from a non EU country into the EU.
As a Swiss resident you can not simply bring a non Swiss taxed and plated car from aboard into Switzerland.
(Or in general: As a resident of customs region XYZ you can not simply bring a non-XYZ taxed and plated car from aboard into XYZ. )

Simply = Driving over the border and not getting permission from customs (a.k.a declaring).

At the Swiss side getting permission (depending on the circumstances for a few days up to a year) is relatively easy and simple. At the EU side getting permission may by naught to impossible as there are many restrictions and only a few exemptions. Driving to your place of residence in the EU is most likely the only one.

Your citizenship is of no importance. It is a customs problem, which means your driving license is not at risk and also not of importance. But, very, very hefty fines of up to more than 50% of the cars value (Switzerland) or multiple of the cars value (Italy) may occur.

Why keep asking what is essentially the same question?

It is actually a bit more precisely worded

Still, the correct questions and answers would be:

Can I anyone buy a vehicle in Switzerland?
Yes, anyone. Literally anyone. Literally literally.

Can I register a vehicle in Switzerland before I have an address in Switzerland?
No.

Can I register a vehicle in Switzerland before I have my 'B' permit?
Yes. But you need an address where you are registered and you will need proof that you are registered at said address. This may even be a permanent holiday home (In such a case see my post above regarding customs problems if you are an EU resident.)

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

Thank you for your replies.

I want to buy a campervan such as T4 or T5 in Switzerland/France/Germany and live in it throughout July in Switzerland. I will receive my work permit in August and I will get an apartment in August in the Geneva area.

I could get the vehicle in the UK, however, I want a Left Hand Drive camper and they are not so easy to find with the specification I require.

I believe it is easier to get the vehicle in Germany with export plates and then drive to Switzerland. Any thoughts?

Hiring a camper is not an option as it is too expensive for the entire month of July.

Thank you.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

to complicate matters even more, I plan to drive my Albanian registered Renault Scenic Mk11 from Albania to Geneva in early July with all my stuff. ( I am British and have been working in Albania for a few years.)

I cannot live in the Renault Scenic hence the need to buy the campervan in or near Switzerland.

Will I have any issues entering Switzerland from Italy if the car has all the correct paperwork, insurance and Green Card insurance for a few weeks? I will also have a detailed list of all my luggage/possessions that will be in the car.

Thanks.

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

Why are you trying to make your life so difficult??

You're not going to want to live in the camper van beyond when you have a work permit - so keep it simple.

Drive your Scenic over - and then stay in an AirBnB for a month - ideally one with a parking spot in an underground garage.

For customs seee customs website:
https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...-effects-.html

It should be possible to register with a camp ground address. This is just like a hotel room or furnished short term apartment.

A view from the Swiss travelling people foundation:

Update:

I am British. I will bring an Albanian registered car to France initially in early July. I will drive in and out of Switzerland regularly throughout July as a tourist.

I will have the work permit for Switz and start the job in Switz late August, but I will be living in France.

Will I be ok driving the Albanian registered car in France and Switz for a few months with the EU green card insurance that I'll get in Albania before I set off?

Depends if France allows residents to drive foreign registered cars.

Of course they do. Why would a tourist not be allowed to bring his/her non French registered vehicle into France for a few weeks?

Re: Buying a vehicle from autoricardo.ch

And what time frame you have in France before you need to get French plates. If you live in France and work in Switzerland you´ll have a G permit so best to ask on a French forum?

Unless one of the experts knows the answer.

And............... please please please, the country is called Switzerland.
