Extended warranty for cars

My car is now at the mid-point of its 5-year MFR warranty. I have the option to extend the warranty for the 6th and 7th year. I have no price info yet as I haven't contacted a dealer. But before going in, I would like to get some feedback here in EF.

Anybody on here that has taken an extended warranty offer? What would be a fair price-point for a 2 year extension? I plan to keep the car for as long as I can. Only 1 issue so far, the motor to auto-fold the side mirrors went kaput and these were replaced under warranty.

Re: Extended warranty for cars

My experience with Quality1 is that its definitely not worth it. We'd been dutifully paying CHF 700 a year for the last 3 years for one of their comprehensive packages which was supposed to cover electrics. Anyway the car started suffering drained batteries which was diagnosed by the dealer as a faulty comfort access/central locking unit. The dealer wrote the letter to Quality1 explaining the issue and the costs and the claim was rejected, i followed up with several emails for an explanation but they never replied, so I ditched them.

Thanks. On that thread, general consensus seems to be not worth it, and I better keep my own repair fund.

In any case, for the sake of info I'll contact the dealer, ask for price and a print-out of the fine prints. The other thread seem to discuss a 3rd party warranty, what is offered to me is from the MFR (if I'm not mistaken, let's see).

This is a bit like "how long is a piece of string" question really

We know nothing about the car, is a Fiat Panda or a Maclaren 570, how much do you drive, are you planning on keeping it....

If the warranty is from the manufacturer, then it maybe interesting, but on a 5 year old car it will be expensive, that is for sure.

I got one once on a Chf 200k Merc, an extra 2 years and it cost around 1200.--, the car had 12000km on it atr the time
