getting BMW to correct the shudder / drivetrain problem - 2011 BMW X5 E70

Hello BMW owners.

Wondering if any of you have had this issue and how it was resolved – not just the repair, but willingness to get BMW to pay for it out of goodwill as its a known issue/fault which is happening (it is not normal for transmission faults on low KM cars).

Advice and your experiences please….

Problem. I have a problem with my 2011 BMW X5 E70 - its an xdrive (transfer case) issue. Which turns out to be common enough. This model is built 2007-2013, this issue mostly 2011 onwards (see also a front driveshaft recall, but that’s another topic).

Symptoms. Doing parking manoeuvres (driving solely with the steering wheel turned) the car shudders in both Drive and Reverse. You might also call it a jerk, shake or judder. It’s not an engine misfire, its drivetrain related. Feels like the diff is locked (if you know older 4x4 feelings).

Searching various forums, Bimmerfest was the most useful in this case (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...ight=vibration

And if you scroll through the bimmerfest post, there are links to a PDF diagnostic sheet for your BMW technician to follow). It seems the culprit is a fault in part of the xDrive system (which controls power between front and rear), specifically the Transfer Case failure (in German : Verteilergetriebe defekt BMW E70 x5),

Diagnosis: I will go to BMW Meilen and get them to diagnose and confirm it officially. I had a BMW callout technician come on Wednesday and he said don’t drive distances, take it in and see how much of it they will cover. Meantime I used a rental car on the long weekend.

There are two main resolutions (both expensive) which others find works:
1. Change the oil in the transfer case (sometimes resolves it) or
2. replace the transfer case (everyone who reports doing this find it resolves the problem)

But both are expensive ...

My question: So to my question – anyone had this (or similar) resolved by BMW here in Switzerland and any experiences or suggestions for getting them to pay for it? I am out of warranty and don’t have a service plan (unusual for Switzerland ). I know my chances will vary on how receptive the BMW people are, or extent to which its recognized as an issue and has some kind of customer service directive out on it.

My rationale for ‘they should pay” is that the xdrive failing due to a failed transfer case is not something that should happen at all, let alone on a low KM car (issue started at 30,000km) – based others’ reports, this is a known issue which BMW has, in some cases recognized. Also, its well enough known that the Rheingold BMW diagnostics /maintenance system asks technicians when they change the transfer case oil (not something you need to do normally) if “did the customer report juddering/shaking?” and does a reset of the sensors.

My car is now 60,000km, but that's still a baby in the life of transmissions

No offence but I don't think you have a chance of getting them to pay, you first noticed the problem at 30000km and then you've driven another 30000km before you try and get it fixed

The only hope you've got is if you can prove that you've had it serviced per the BMW recommended service schedule and that you mentioned it as an issue when you took it in for servicing.

With my Audi they always ask if I've had any problems that may need investigation.

I thought shudder at low speeds was normal, as I hadn't had a 4x4 before. I did report it, but not in writing. Was told no worries. Now the problem has evolved to also happening in a straight driving, hence why I am investigating it again now. No offence taken.

Maybe but at least they invite me to play in their world cup golf championship, if you win the regional round then the country final is usually pretty spectacular, and the world final is awesome.

Actually they don't charge that much, could be because they like taking mine out for spin.....
