Second hand car - some issues

Hey all,

I bought a used car back in February from a dealer. I don't believe I had any guarantee with the car... looking back at the ad I see some reference to a guarantee but I think that is probably only if you sign up...

Anyway...

All was fine with the car, until recently (when it got warm), I noticed the AC isn't working... so on Saturday took it to a place to get diagnosed (and potentially re-gassed) and they discovered that there is a more serious issue with the compressor...bit of an expensive fix.

The same day (Saturday)... I notice there is a puddle under the front of the car. I checked the liquid and it's coolant - probably leaking from the radiator or a coolant tube.

I'm guessing I have nothing here as I inspected the car and test-drove before buying (although checking the air con was tricky as it was so cold in Feb!).... but......... does anybody know about some customer-rights or other law that would allow me to go back to the dealer to sort at least one of these issues out?

Appreciate any input.... cheers!

what car is it, how much, how old, what kind of garage was it (main dealer, dodgy guy at the side of the road etc)

Re: Second hand car - some issues

And the "funny" bit is you probably paid a good extra for the fact that garage were "safe and sound".

At least so I heard numerous times, remote allegations, marketing, myths, and the only loser is the buyer.

PS: Even if the damages you mention could have been created later, I still don't believe in Swiss garages.

Re: Second hand car - some issues

It's a Honda Civic, 2010, automatic, and I paid 8500.-

The dealer was not a main dealer...a guy with his own business, he has around 50-60 cars in his lot, doesn't come across as dodgy. This car in particular had been on the market for a while however (starting around 10k.-)

I don't think I paid a premium for buying from a 'garage' - looking for automatic Civics it was a bit cheaper than market....also only 68k km, one previous owner (a guy in his 70s) and full service history...

I suspect being sat around for around a year in his lot didn't do the AC system any good.

I will try that, just thought I'd see here if there are any customer rights or anything I should be aware of..!

Re: Second hand car - some issues

Power train may be guaranteed up to a year (and limited milage), other stuff three months.

You are now at four months, so quite doubtful (leaky coolant isn't power-train, nor is A/C).

Sorry,

Tom

Could be. I live near town but next to the forest.

I haven't had it checked yet but I will see if it's a hose or something that's damaged. That shouldn't be too expensive I hope. It's also a problem that has occurred during the time of me driving I guess.

My question is really about the AC - which was surely not working when I originally bought the car...

Don't know yet. Had it inspected by one of these 'AC top-up' garages who did a pressure test. They found the compressor wasn't working.

I did a bit of DIY diagnosis myself...when I turn the AC on/off there is no sound or change in the air flow. It may be the AC compressor clutch not engaging..

maybe, maybe not, if its not been used for a year the seals would have dried out, maybe the seller had it refilled with extra oil added in the vain hope of resealing it, which never works for more then a couple of weeks, having all the seals replaced would cost a fortune here.

Re: Second hand car - some issues

I finally ditched my 17 year old Focus because the compressor died last year (plus we have four other cars).

It worked the year before, and died without notice.

if there is no pressure in the system then the clutch wont engage, at least on all the more modern cars I've had air con dealings with, get a 2nd opinion!

eta which would also suggest you're losing gas anyway, so time to open the windows

Re: Second hand car - some issues

technically, you should actually have a 2 year "Gewährleistung" if nothing has been agreed in the contract when buying. Perhaps check with your legal insurance.

Join and browse some Honda Civic forums.
This thread discusses similar issues.

Even if you have no intention of fixing it yourself (unless it's just the fuse) , at least you'll get an idea of what it could be and costs (outside of CH).

Re: Second hand car - some issues

Unfortunately without a guarantee you'll need to get it checked out by a good mechanic. Get it repaired and chalk it up to experience.

A warranty costs 1000-2000chf per year depending on the car and the level of coverage. That can be as little as 3.5hrs of main dealer labour!!

When you take it to the mechanic ask him about a warranty.

"Normally" when you buy a second hand car, the dealer will have their mechanic run a quick control of all the important points prior to handing it over to the buyer.

Was this done?

And can you tell us why you decided NOT to get the guarantee?

Not all dealers have mechanics...quote from the OP

"The dealer was not a main dealer...a guy with his own business, he has around 50-60 cars in his lot, doesn't come across as dodgy. This car in particular had been on the market for a while however (starting around 10k.-)"

The guarantees that are offered on cars of this age are not really worth the paper they're printed on
