No Petrol/Diesel Cars Sold in France by 2040

Well, there goes the French car industry.

"No diesel car or petrol will be sold in France by 2040, announced Thursday the Minister of Transition ecological and solidarity, Nicolas Hulot. He proposed the creation of a premium to help low-income households acquire cleaner vehicles.

"We are announcing the end of the sale of gasoline and diesel cars by 2040," Nicolas Hulot said by presenting his "climate plan" at a press conference. The ex-environmental activist has admitted that this objective is "heavy", especially for car manufacturers.

It is a "real revolution", but "the conditions are there," judged Nicolas Hulot. "Our own automakers have in their boxes enough to feed and embody this promise (...) which is also a public health agenda," he added.

Vehicles before 1997

In a closer perspective, the most modest households will benefit from a "transition bonus" to get rid of their polluting cars in favor of a cleaner vehicle, he also announced.

This premium will "replace a pre-1997 diesel (vehicle) diesel, or pre-2001 gasoline, with a new or used cleaner vehicle." The Minister did not specify the amount of this premium."

They'll never manage to build enough charging stations to cope. :p

2040 pfffft.

German has already taken steps today to reduce the number of ICE vehicles on the road!

That's not the point. In 2040, you'll mostly be all dead (well, that's only 23 years ahead so only the old foggies would eat dandelions from their roots, and a few unlucky).

The french politicians will benefit now, from a positive vibe of the "green supporters herd", for something they will most likely never do, since it's far away in the future, far from their control, and far from being able to verify the result.

Looks great i'm going to try the technique with my boss, promising to do an excellent work and complete it before 2040...

You read the comment wrong, he is talking about that horrific vehicle, quaskai-whatever-its-name, not about the french people.

FTFY.

Come on be sensible, a Quasqai will be a classic by then commanding huge margins by the classic car collectors.

I'm hoping a jack or a lift will have failed and pancaked me before things get that bad.

A Qashqai is what happens when an SUV is designed by committee or focus group.

They've just opened the huge hangar called station F to nurture startups, and now electric vehicles. Hey, France is becoming a wanna-be California.
Edit: they'll either be visionary and lead the new industry or soon PSA and Renault will be just badges sticked next to new Skodas :-)

"If you subsidise it, they will come."

Essentially there will be no pre '97 Diesels or pre '01 gas vehicles scrapped between now and 2040. The price of scrap steel will rise and a whole alternate materials industry will spring up.

Pure genius.

I agree, but battery powered cars will be old news by 2040. Hydrogen powered internal combustion engines will be the rage. The technology is in it's infancy now, but there are several start-ups working on it and conversion kits for some engines already available (mostly those driving industrial generators).

It's a gamble but you never know and it's worth throwing in a few hundred and see where it goes: HYGE

Ah... well there you go.

All we have to do is get around:
Quote:

As of 1999, the majority of hydrogen (∼95%) is produced from fossil fuels by steam reforming or partial oxidation of methane and coal gasification with only a small quantity by other routes such as biomass gasification or electrolysis of water
"Aha," you say, "those numbers are from 1999!"

Quite correct. The point being that if the numbers had changed since 1999, then presumably someone would have thought to update Wikipedia.

Burning fossil fuel elsewhere is not the same thing as not burning fossil fuel.

If you want to drive around with a gas bomb in the back of your car go ahead. Do you know why they stopped using hydrogen for the old air ships don't you. Still, it'll keep all those newly re-employed coal miners in the States in work.

And again, these supposedly "green" vehicles are anything but.

The implication here seems to be that it isn't doing that already?!

Volvo has just announced they will stop producing cars powered by a conmustion engine only by 2019. They will launch five purely electric cars 2019-2021, two thereof in the Tesla range.

No, they didn't.

"Carmaker Volvo has said all new models will have an electric motor from 2019.

The Chinese-owned firm, best known for its emphasis on driver safety, has become the first traditional carmaker to signal the end of the internal combustion engine.

It plans to launch five fully electric models between 2019 and 2021 and a range of hybrid models.

But it will still be manufacturing earlier models that have pure combustion engines."

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-40505671

Given that they have no experience in the market yet it would be company suicide to suddenly stop producing internal combustion powered cars until they find out if there's actually enough demand for the new models. I'm no business woman, but even I can see that.

not entirely correct. they will not stop producing cars with a gasoline or diesel engine but every car will be at least a mild hybrid.

makes me think: why not invest in nuclear power plants? they will be needed to produce all the green energy to make our world a better place.
