Buying a car from another canton

Apologies for posting about such a common thing again, but the information I am reading seems to be sending me round in circles.

I live in Lausanne and am buying a second hand car from Uri. It is from a private owner (my uncle) not a dealer.

Is it possible for me to get VD plates and insurance for it before I have the paper work so I can go and collect the car, put new plates on and drive off?

For various reasons it is not possible for me to drive the car home with the UR plates and then mail the plates back.

Any help is appreciated.

Before you have what paper work?
You need the grey registration certificate to get number plates.

You can get "Tageschilder", here is the link to Uri's form:
http://www.ur.ch/dl.php/de/5683ee7bd...ewilligung.pdf
VD probably does the same thing, give your stva a call.

I mean the documents of the car, that show I own it.

Presumably the current owner has this certificate. So that means that I will have to drive it home with the UR plates?

Tageschilder allows me to drive the car for one day? Do I still need my own insurance?

There is no such document.

The only document that exists is the gray card which shows the registered holder. The registered holder is responsible that the car is insured, in good and roadworthy shape (when on the road), and that car is not driven by anyone which has no license.

Thats all of it.

If the current owner sends you the gray card by mail you after a short call with your insurance agent, can register it in your name. Registration has nothing to do with ownership.

For Tagesschilder (day plates) you will need at least a copy of the gray card. Some canton want to see the original.

Re: Buying a car from another canton

Have your uncle send you the cancelled gray card, organize insurance, take the gray card to get the plates at the service des automobile, take the plates to Uri, put the plates on the car and drive the car home.

Done.

Re: Buying a car from another canton

Can anyone tell me how he would cancel the gray card? Is it enough to send it to me and I can do it from Vaud? or would he have to be in Uri to do it?

He doesn't actually live in Switzerland which is the problem here..

You don't need to get it to be cancelled, just get new plates yourself & return the old ones.

I'd say that is not possible - unless he has a purchase contract for it with all the details. Your way anybody could register anybody's car if he had the grey card (and lots of people keep the grey card in the car. I did for decades).

Yes.

Also, anybody can cancel it, my wife does it all the time for me, even when we weren't married (I cancel several each year), and I cancelled my daughter's, and a friend's when he gave me back the motorcycle I had given him a few years earlier to put it in my name.

Registration has absolutely nothing to do with ownership. The person mentioned in the gray card is just the holder. A holder has nearly zero rights but lots of obligations.

Yes dear. Ever since I got a car which apparently looks decent (at least it's the first one they didn't plaster with their business cards "we buy all cars for cash" yet ) I only have a copy of the grey card in there.
