Taking the Train from Zurich to Lugano

Hello all, I'm going to travel to Lugano from Dominican Republic to start a Phd at SFI in Lugano. I believe that is cheaper for me to travel to Zurich and take the train to Lugano from there, because the ticket is 500 dollar more if I go directly to Lugano. I've never been in switzerland and unfortunately I don't speak neither German or Italian. Can you someone give me detailed information on how to get to the train station in Zurich, cost, luggage limitations and travel time

Re: Taking the Train from Zurich to Lugano

Thanks Lob, Another question would I have problem with the swiss custom if I cross the border by train with my student visa? I'm asking this because is cheaper if I fly to milan and then to Switzerland.

Re: Taking the Train from Zurich to Lugano

You would probably need some kind of visa to enter Italy (maybe a transit visa would be possible). Entering Switzerland by train should not be a problem if you have a visa that lets you enter by plane

Re: Taking the Train from Zurich to Lugano

There is a bus from Milano's int'l airport Malpensa to the Lugano train station (Mendrisio). It is very convenient, takes about one hour and costs 23 Euro (one way). I took it about 2 months ago. Here is a link:

The bus stopped briefly at the border, but was waved through by customs/immigration. More and more of the border checks seem to be disappearing or not enforced. Maybe because Schengen is being adopted.
