Fare for travelling with bicycle with ZVV S-Bahn

If I want to travel with bicycle from Uster to Rapperswil using ZVV S-Bahn do I need to buy additional ticket for the bicycle?

Re: Fare for travelling with bicycle with ZVV S-Bahn

Unless it is a folding one folded, in which case it is 'hand luggage' and goes for free.
Half priceTicket* is necessary for a bike. If you do a long trip, check out the price compared to the bike day tickets which might come cheaper even for a single journey.
More info here.

* Edit: on looking at the site more carefully, it looks as if you need a full ticket for the bike if you don't have a half-price card (Swiss Pass). I've had the half-price thing for ever and a day so I didn't know!

On my screen the option to buy in on the right. I see it clearly.

I see only:
  • 1-day bike pass reduced fare
  • 1-day bike pass full fare
  • Storage reservation

However no: "Short-distance bike ticket reduced fare" (I have Halbtax card)

You just buy a normal half fare ticket.......not bike-specific

Pay 99,90 chf for a bag, and your bike has a lifetime of free travelling.

(great solution, unless carrying the bag is to much of a burden)

Hmm.. Guess that is the method to get my mtb up Uetli without sweating for an hour, such a bag in a backpack is no burden when going downhill..

No. Only up to Waldegg. Up to Uetliberg costs another CHF 100, even if in a bag.

Thanks, saves me the search. (and I can understand the rule, the train would be overcrowded with bikes)

Back to sweating it is..

Re: Fare for travelling with bicycle with ZVV S-Bahn

I know this is an old question... but for me (last weekend) it was still a valid one and the answers here (and the offical website) still left us confused. So I reached out to the SSB Twitter account for an answer:
https://twitter.com/mountainash/stat...59001990213632

I still don't have an answer on why it's called a "short distance" ticket?

But for others, just get a ticket for yourself and then a half fare for your bike. If the half fare is going to cost more than 14 CHF, get a day pass for your bike instead.

(sorry for the poor image resolution - but this site/forum doesn't allow anything larger)

Explained a bit clearer on the ZVV Website:

Re: Fare for travelling with bicycle with ZVV S-Bahn

I agree, SBB mentioning "short-distance" trips in their website is definitely not clear. Maybe the meaning is that for long travels a day pass is more convenient? The definition of "short" and "long" would then be fare-based.

Also, in Zurich there is another type of "short-distance" ticket (Kurzstrecke) which is a cheaper ticket that only allows one to ride for a few stops instead than one hour; each vending machine can provide information on the valid stretches according to its location.
