Nice, but no-go, mofas have pedals.

Tom
Damn, I honestly think a Stromer would be the better choice compared to paying some 2000 CHF for a well used 80s Mofa... better ride, more torque, most likely better brakes.

Re: Search for a good mofa

This is the one I like

http://m.tutti.ch/zuerich/fahrzeuge/...r_17230247.htm

He prefers the E-Mofas we looked at online. Go figure. We'll see what he thinks of them in person.

Regarding cost; remember that they aren't making any more of these. They keep their value pretty well. I'm sure we'll get a good portion of it back in two years when he upgrades.

Apparently not all manufacturers have got that news:

Thats fugly. This is what a teenager would want: http://www.sfm-bikes.de/madass-e/

They used to make a 50cc "Mad Ass", but you'd need to find it used.
It would be, apart from "1.500 W Drehstrommotor am Hinterrad" - I think the e-bike equivalent limit for 14yo is 1kw.

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression that they had been outlawed, but apparently not. It's just that all of the good manufacturers went out of business. The garage you linked sells Tomos which is a lower quality mofa, according to the sales rep I talked to on the phone. Got to love Swiss honesty. He suggested we wait until winter when he has time to rebuild a Puch.

Re: Search for a good mofa

I think it was the 2 stroke engines that were either banned in new mopeds or at least forced to comply with much more stringent emissions standards. Old ones remain legal, I guess the first one here is probably old stock.

Re: Search for a good mofa

Just a quick follow up to thank everyone for their input. He decided on an bike instead of a mofa. We wound up getting him the Bergstrom WLV7. Cool looking bike. His father and I are borrowing it at every opportunity

Moped is a German term.
It is also the correct English term.

Imported from German perhaps?

(I didn't realise my post you quoted was a bit late until after posting so I deleted it, thinking it was irrelevant, before I saw your reply)

You completely failed the requirements!
It's a 14 year old kid ffs!

It needs to have lot of noise, looks cool, and probably have one or two extra space for the conquests.

Mofas don't look cool and never did. Not even when I was 14. They are noisy, but clearly it's the bad sort of noise... At 14 can you only wait to turn 16 to finally get a scooter or some decent moped. Mofas dont have an extra seat either. They are more of a necessity...

Swedish.

"The word moped was coined by Swedish journalist Harald Nielsen in 1952, as a portmanteau of "motor" and "pedal". It is however often claimed to be derived from "motor-velocipede.[1] According to Douglas Harper, the Swedish terms originated from "(trampcykel med) mo(tor och) ped(aler)", which means "pedal cycle with engine and pedals" (the earliest versions had auxiliary pedals).[2] Like some of the earliest two wheeled motorcycles, all mopeds were once equipped with bicycle pedals."
