One of the worst car that i had the unpleasure to drive... trust me... if you go 120 kmph with that thing, is because you are going in a downhill (had to rent one of those in spain for more than a month...)

Plus, bad quality, back visibility is almost non existent, lack of power, etc...
I've driven one, and it's certainly not like an Audi A3.
But it seems like in CH you have to be rich to be able to insure any car that cost more than 12'000 CHF when new

Re: Least/Most Expensive Cars To Insure/Possess/Send to Car Service

Does anyone think buying a SEAT Ibiza (CHF 12'000 when new) or a SEAT Leon (CHF 14'500 when new) and insuring it is cheap like a Kia or expensive like German cars? And what about Skoda and CitroŽn? Fiat?

The brand really doesn't matter a jot.. The original cost, your details, the power of the car, insurance options.. That's pretty much it.

Comparis is your friend. Go on autoscout, looks at some cars, enter their details and yours and get some ideas.

My wife will be giving away away her honda jazz in a month or so you could have that

It's practical, spacious, nippy, low insurance, silver, semi automatic..

It's also hail damaged, scratched, bumped, dirty.. But hey, it'll be free and nobody likes to park beside it.

Re: Least/Most Expensive Cars To Insure/Possess/Send to Car Service

For insurance ask comparis. Third party insurance doesn't care how expensive it is to repair your own car but it does care how likely you are to have an accident. As does comprehensive insurance.

Non dealer servicing is pretty much the same everywhere unless you get some exotic with expensive oil or brakes. Parts for german cars are generally cheap and easy to get, including second hand spares.

For reliability simply google the model you'reinterested in and there will be buyers' guides to give you info on the known common problems.

Only if you have a crappy driving history.

And if you only get 3rd party insurance, the original price doesn't matter.

Haha kind of you I still live in the city, so I can't get a car yet, but as I have ADHD, I like to change gears myself

Does this mean I can in fact buy an older Audi A3, and not have to pay lots of money for insurance because of the original price? It only gets expensive if I want to get the car insured (the type of insurance which isn't mandatory)?

KMs .. Something around 130k .. 140k ballpark
Semi Auto .. It's either full auto or you can push a button and change fully manually with paddles on the steering wheel.

It looks like junk but it drives ok.. It had the full works 120k service about 18 months ago, control technique same time.. cost bloody 1600chf. It's only had an old change since.. So other consumables probably due.

There's one .. Try the details in comparis and see what it would cost to insure.. Fully or 3rd party only.

Thanks, I'll do that, but right now the website is down.

So everyone here has been talking about the full casco? The casco insurance is expensive if the original price was high (and other factors), while the mandatory 3rd party insurance is about details of the driver and the canton, and not the original price?

Which means that in a couple of years I can buy a 5 year old Volvo V40 that has driven 80'000 kilometres, and not have to pay much 3rd party insurance?

I've done that calculator now for some cars, and it was not bad Thanks for the advice!

With mandatory 3rd party insurance, the insurer only pays damages you cause to other cars and people, not your own. It doesn't matter if you are driving a panda or a volvo. The likelihood of you causing damage and how much damage decides most the price (based on demographics, young and foreigners pay more for example). I'm not sure if some insurers also differentiate the price with the risk associated with power or different models.
If you're thinking of getting a used car full kasko may be useless or not worth it, unless you are paying in installments and don't have money to buy a new one should you crash.

Oh my god, so boring with a Kia
Let me tell you a secret: there will ALWAYS be a more fun, more colorful, more attractive car than the whatever car you may happen to have :-)

In my view
- An A3 is about as exciting as a piece of cardboard. They're as bland to drive just as any other car, and common as muck. They're just expensive, that's all there is to it.
- With the V40 I would think there's a pair of octogenarians driving or their nephews that got to drive on good behaviour. But it's safe.
- Subaru Imprezza, well, yes, reliable, but the standard model is nothing special over a Kia and all you'll think about is that it's not a WRX

And with this I probably managed to insult half of EF car owners :-)

Quote:
So it depends on the car brand or the price of the new car?
Insurance companies have all kinds of complex calculations to work out their premiums, most of the time there are rules and there can be odd results as well. In UK there would be loads of insurers and many specialised on young age drivers that would be able to give competitive quotes on some specific models. Here in CH not sure if that exists. But you can search on comparis

I would think the less powerful (as in, lower horsepower) relatively modern cars with good safety features (ABS, airbags, etc) would be the ones to attract lower premiums - think <80bhp cars, such as mentioned Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Polo, Fabia, Fiesta, Ibiza, i20, etc, etc, etc.

You're 25 years old - at your age it's not about what car you drive, it's about where you drive it

OP, why not a used one? There are plenty to choose much better than the new ones...

In fact, in my opinion the older, the better... They were meant to last forever, even BMW

Also, here in Switzerland they HAVE TO take care properly of the cars, otherwise wont pass the MFK so, I guess there are all impecable, or almost...

But expensive to insure? And to get car service?
If you are worried about costs then get something cheap that will take some abuse for a year or two until you find your feet. And don't you have friends or parents who drive that you could ask about this?
