Which car as a weekend runner for up to 25k?

EDIT 16.03.2018

Ok my original plan was for getting a car around 15k CHF, for which the Alfa Giulietta caught my eye. Since then, my budget has now been raised to a maximum of 25k CHF with the reasoning that if I get a car at this stage in my life I want something that looks good that I am happy with for the next few years and that can take me skiing and on road trips around Switzerland and Europe.

My requirements list is:
  • Tax band A-C for efficiency
  • 2016 and newer preferred
  • Looks and feels good to drive
  • FWD or 4WD (no RWD)
  • 5-door
  • Reasonable economy and power
  • Reliable
  • Good quality and level of kit

My primary choice at the moment is the Audi A3 Sportback 2016 model or newer which goes for around 23-25k for a decent example https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/autos/...&yearfrom=2016

This fulfils my requirements for looking sexy and feeling good (if not thrilling) to drive, being compact yet spacious enough, and also having enough grunt (150PS) and economy to be very balanced.

I also see a lot of well-specced VW Golfs out there that while admittedly not as cool as an Audi, do provide more value for money. You can even get new 2017/2018 1.4 TSI Highline models with tons of kit imported for around 22k https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/autos/...&yearfrom=2016

So, EF denizens, any opinions on the above cars, or any alternatives I may not have considered please?

I personally never liked that one, always had the feeling it would fall apart when driving over 100.

So, after years of saying: "I don't need a car", I have decided to get one to give me more freedom on what I want to do on a weekend. As it's more of a want than a need, I don't want to get anything fancy and have budgeted around 15'000 chf. My requirements list is:
  • Tax band A-C for efficiency
  • Not ancient (2012 and above)
  • Looks passable
  • Reasonable economy and
  • Reliable enough
  • Reasonable quality and level of kit

So far my research has led me to view the following car as a prime contender:

Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.4 TB MultiAir https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review...t-drive-review

Main complaints from reviews are that it has a slightly slow shifting automatic transmission and a high price, but considering that 2014/2015 models with less than 50k on the clock can be had for 15'000 CHF or less, someone else is thankfully taking that nasty depreciation hit. It appears to have a surprisingly decent turbocharged engine and a lot of kit. Quality and reliability seem at least average (Alfa seem to have improved a lot in the last decade). It also looks pretty decent.

Example here (based in Romandie) https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/alfa...3d2013%26r%3d5

So, EF denizens, any opinions or alternatives please?

Hahahahah Im afraid "Reliable" and "Alfa Romeo" never goes in the same sentence...

I got a smart car for the same reason as you, ease of taking weekend trips. I can't say enough good things about it. It's got plenty of room for two people plus a weekends worth of gear, it's a convertible, and I can park it practically anywhere.

Yet they beat VW in a 2106 reliability rating but you wouldn't say the same about a VW so you're not being totally objective, are you?

most Alfa owner have a very relaxed attitude to reliability, or reality

saying that, i've never understood where vw's reputation for reliability comes from??? certainly not my experiences of them, and parts cost a fortune.

in 2106, as you said, thats a possibility. Unlikely, but lets say possible. Specifically re Giulia:

"However, in other areas, Alfa Romeo seems like a stuck record, its needle unable to play past a reputation for poor quality..."
https://jalopnik.com/the-alfa-romeo-...art-1776852795

“We have had a lot of problems,” Linkov explains. “I haven’t had the opportunity to get into it because it’s been at the dealer so often.”:

90 years of improvement should do the trick. The new plant in Nambia really produces 1st class quality, as it is expected from Africa. Europe is on decline quality wise since the 2098 dilibirium scandal. But how can you get one of those from the future?

I'm in the same quest as you are Richdog. I don't want to hijack your thread, but I was looking for some brands and I think Skoda has done quite well latetly. I am aiming for a Skoda Rapid but I'm still not sure...

Seat, is the Spanish VW... however, the engines still come from Germany...

Also, be careful, as cars like the Nissan Pulsar are Made in Spain... also if you got the Diesel one, the engines come from Renault...

Re: Which car as a weekend runner for around 15k?

VW Up/Seat Mii/Skoda Citigo?

Cheap to run and insure, compact, economic, comfy, good kit - heated seats, nav, good stereo, handles like a go-kart, ours has been reliable for the past 80,000Km - equally at home outside the city.

e.g. 11,700...

Re: Which car as a weekend runner for around 15k?

my daily drive is a 2006 focus, high mileage, work horse and its been pretty faultless, its a nice place to sit on the motorway, all the usual toys, and very very cheap for spares, mpg isn't the best but I have a crap combination of auto 1.6 which is stupidly underpowerd, the ST range wouldn't have that issue, and would have a lot more toys
