Expired [US] Drivers License

Hello

I would be grateful if anyone could give advice or share tips on the following situation.

I am American originally from Illinois and have been living in the canton of Zürich since 2010.

Unfortunately, I never exchanged my US drivers license when I arrived and my US drivers license expired in 2012.

I have been told by the Swiss traffic office that I need to renew my US drivers license so that I can take the test and get a Swiss license.

From looking at the DMV website, I need to provide documents that prove IL residency. How can I get a US license if I am not a resident?

Thanks in advance

Re: Expired [US] Drivers License

See: https://www.englishforum.ch/transpor...s-mark-ii.html

Request a driver record extract from the Illinois DMV/SoS: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/de...eabstract.html
If you have parent/legal guardian, brother, sister, spouse, grandparent, child or a grandchild back in Illinois they can request one if you provide them with a PA. Other wise you may need the help of an attorney.

If the Swiss authorities do not accept the record point to Art. 24h VZV https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...ndex.html#a24h and that Switzerland would do the very same in case one lives aboard and needs a new driving license.

Be aware that as more than five years have passed since you moved to Switzerland and obliviously you can not proof that you drove cars regularly in the last five years you may be requested to to a "Kontrolfahrt" (30 minutes test drive to asses driving skills)

Re: Expired [US] Drivers License

Are you sure the US license has expired? My UK driving license picture card had expired but the license itself was still "active" in the background. I still had to do the kontrollfahrt though.

Maybe the US work the same way?
