Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Wow! They got on with the last bit of that quickly then. Last time I saw it, it was still pretty much of a mess. Mind you that must have been late August/early September. Tarmac was down and I think the support posts for the signage was up at the eastern end, but the western bit by the port still looked like there was a lot to do.

Now, if only they'd get on with the western branch.

Don't hold your breath.

The western branch still is a subject of much discussion in Biel. Actually, many are hoping that it won't be built. It will take a few years before construction can beginn and construction time will be about 10-15 years.

Went through this morning, quite nice, but make sure you get in the right lane at the ends of the tunnels. Not much chance to change last minute if you get it wrong.

Both sides or where specifically?

Haven't been on it yet, but for sure want to go to the Brocki/ Centre Boujean on the other side of town sometime and then will see how the tunnels look from the inside .

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Yeah, both sides/ends. They are clearly marked for Delemont or Solothurn at the eastern end and Neuchatel or Bern on the west, but a bit suddenly go from the two lane highway into separate single lane roads for the directions. We almost had an accident in front of us just before the western end as the car ahead of us suddenly realised they didn't want to go to Neuchatel, signalled and started to pull out without looking so nearly hit the car in the Bern lane who'd just overtaken us. Hopefully people will be paying attention to the signage and get in the proper lanes early next week and in the future.

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Thanks Medea, forewarned is forearmed. I predict loads of accidents anyway, as for a few km direction to Bern it is a single lane Autostrasse/ Autoroute..... Always was a neuralgic stretch of road ( I am driving on that stretch regularly for 30yrs), esp. cars almost riding on your back bumper and clearly their drivers being stressed out and in a panic coz they can‘t overtake you, despite yourself being over the speed limit already (poor sods!) .....

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Yes, a bit surprised they've never considered widening the road into Bienne from Bern. If it's any consolation hubby complains about exactly the same thing when driving from here to Lausanne for work every day. No matter how fast he's going someone always want him to get out of the way so they can go faster.

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Oh may the gods have mercy.......I went today around just locally, on the Brügg/Biel side...oh my oh my....where there was traffic free flowing ........there are now countless traffic lights, some of them IMHO needless....

When I was growing up we called Köniz as a joke, 'Ampliwil' as it had a traffic light roughly every 50meters.....

Daughter #3 has to pass the new stretch to and fro work. In the small hours it is no problem of course, there is hardly anyone about at 2.30am, but to come back home it takes her now double as long as before, thanks to the countless new traffic lights ......

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Well, some have been around for a fair while, though others around the Port area are new. Hopefully with less traffic in general through the city the flows will get better. And Bienne is still one of the cheapest places we've found to get petrol/diesel for the car when we're in the area. Filled up at the weekend for 1.358 a litre - compared to 1.54 here! And the 1.54 was after a 5 centime reduction on the advertised price!

I know, I live here since almost 30 years.

Btw, the cheapest fuel always is at the LANDI in Brügg ;-)

Haven't come across that so not on any of our routes. What's their price?

It is the one and only ‚Pirate‘ Landi in CH( still has got most of the Landi stock in store, but apart from that is independent) , this means the owner can react really quickly if there is movement in the fuel market. He‘s usually between 2-5cts cheaper than the other petrol stations here.

Re: New autobahn route around Biel

Where's it at? We pass a fairly new Landi when we come to Bienne via Ins, but their advertised price was more expensive.
