Zurich area garage for winter tyres

After a bad experience with Reifendirekt.ch, I am back in the market for a set of winter tyres. I want to do it face to face this time, so if anyone can recommend a garage with reasonable prices in the Zurich area (happy to travel a bit to get to them), I'd appreciate it!

I use PienaCorsa in Grüningen. Bit of travel but excellent service and good pricing (just do tell them if you want other tyres than Pirelli)

What was the nature of the bad experience? - I've used them a few times and never had a problem.

Will probably be using them again so interested to hear any feedback.

I've only had great experiences with them.

They got the diameter of the hole in the centre of the rims wrong and it became very painful to sort out. My lack of language skills certainly didn't help!

Since you only need tyres this time, there wont be a problem. I must have ordered 20 times in 3 countries & never had a problem.

Re: Zurich area garage for winter tyres

I wanted rims as well as tyres. I have a current Fiat Ducato van. It takes rims with a 71mm central hole. I got ones with 75mm. Even Reifendirekt don't know why it happened. Just human error I guess.

Do you still need to get rims? If so, I would recommend going to the dealership for your car's brand to get CH verified rims. Otherwise you have to get the import papers and have the car inspected at the MFK.

The dealership will have the highest possible price, for sure. I can't see a serious tire shop selling anything not complaint with CH rules.

Also, depending on the car/tire size, another set of rims is unnecessary.

Re: Zurich area garage for winter tyres

I will be able to start all over again, as I am returning the wheels sent. Sounds like the best way forward is to keep using my existing rims and just buy new tyres? A bit more effort to change every six months but safer from a legal point of view? Surely Reifendirek.ch would be using compliant rims?

Rims will be compliant but the car still has to be inspected unless the rims are specifically approved for CH. Usually this is the case if you get them from the dealership.

Re: Zurich area garage for winter tyres

So, if you buy complete wheels (tyres pre-fitted on new rims) from Reifendirekt.ch, you would have to have the car re-inspected to be legal?

Yes and No. Yes, You have to go to the MFK with the import papers from the rim manufacturer and have them controlled on your car. No, a complete MFK inspection is not required.

OP asked from Reifendirekt.ch?

I have bought tyres with rims and never had to do a MFK.

Why? No seriously, I bought it here so why should that be forbidden unless with a MFK?

Or am I missing something here?

The Ducato is a fairly common vehicle. Keep an eye on ricardo etc for a set or original steel wheels.

Go to an independent garage. Most will be happy to store your rims, or swap wheels if you store them at home. They'll be happy to change the rubber on a single set of rims too, but they'll charge you to fit and balance at every change (which is only fair).

If you go with non OEM rims you need to make sure that you get ones with a COC that they are compatible with your vehicle.

The plod won't notice if they stop you, or even if you have a minor fender bender, but if there is an accident and a technical inspection happens and it turns out that your rims are not type approved then you'll have problems.

You'll also have problems if your MFK happens to fall when your vehicle is wearing it's winter slippers and they're not OEM, or listed in the Fahrzeugausweis - It's one of the things that the inspectors always spot.

Because you can buy a set of rims in Jumbo which are the same size etc. as your OEM rims, but haven't been approved for use on that particular car.

You can buy 1mm cable in Jumbo. It's copper, and insulated, and it conducts electricity, but if you install it in a circuit which needs 1.5mm cable, then you're breaking the code.

Then you're off the hook. You can expect that AMAG will only supply rims which are suitable for your car. If something goes wrong, you can hang them for it.

To give you an idea, getting a set of rims approved when you're planning to import them cost something in the order of 20K CHF back in the mid '90s. That 20K was just the testing and paperwork. You also had to submit 8 rims for testing. (I know someone who went through this with composite wheels, just for a single model of Alfa Romeo - not cheap, so it's a struggle to generate the business to cover the approval costs.)
